BODY (Last update: 01/10/2005)
Probably the last thing I'm going to spend money on.... but the car is beginning to show its age.
Need to dress up the front and rear bumpers, and remove a few small chips from the hood. JDM headlights and some of the do-it-yourself super bright LED mods I see posted at MX6.com are really catching my attention.
Notes to self for future ref....
.... from M. Hughes at MX6.com on body work and painting....
Gutters... "First, I had to remove ALL of the paint and get down to bare metal. Then, I filled with fiberglass - not covered, filled. I used fiberglass mat and cut it up and with the resin made kind of a "slurry" and filled it solid. I did it with all of the windows out of the car. That is then ground flush to the metal and a layer of kitty hair was used to extend the spread toward the center of the roof. It is kind of a pain since the outside edges of the roof line are higher then the inside, so you need to build it up if you want it to look right. Regular body filler was next followed by a coat of "poly" (which is used to fill pin holes)."
Other seams "... the sideskirts are held on by a 3m panel bond (same stuff that gm uses for bonding fiberglass door skins to the steel door shells on their vehicles) and the front and rear bumpers are bolted, braced, and then panel bonded as well. Then the seems were filled with kitty hair, ground flush, and followed up by a thin layer of bondo and finally some poly skim coat for pinholes."
