71_DEPUTY's 1971 Dodge ChallengerNow the rear winder has a plug in it instead of a handle due to the fixed windows.

Another odd thing about this car is that it was built on Dec 1, 1970.

71_DEPUTY's 1971 Dodge ChallengerBut if you look at the rear right hand side of the trunk - it is up off the rear lip by about 3/4 of an inch. I tried and tried to get it to stay down by adjusting the hinges/bolts- but no way was it staying down.

I've looked at several other 71's and you can see which ones have only one torsion bar in the trunk for the lid due to the right side sticking up. From what I can gather- they had started the new 71 year by only installing one torsion bar for the right side until around Feb/March of 1971. The service guys musta hated the designers for this cost saving measure due to all the trunks sitting up on the right side.

Finally I got very tired of adjusting it and so one afternoon I took the torsion bar out all together.
Now I had to start all over to make both sides have the same amount of pressure to allow the trunk to sit flat.
I measured from the bottom of the hinge to the rear of the back seats and went to the local auto recycler yard. Looked around until I found a hatchback car with the right length for my new torsion unit.

Here is a pic of the hinge side.

And connected to the rear seat.
Now the lid sits flat and can be even partly up and will stay in place.Note-I tried brand new units and they where way too hard for the lid- it would fly open too hard and to close it almost bends the hinges.

71_DEPUTY's 1971 Dodge Challenger This is the type of hub caps and wheels that could be ordered.

Hey, cool car! can i use one of the pictures of your challenger to make a "cartoon" challenger drawing? i'll not be selling it, just sharing it on places like allpar.com and deviantart.com. If you don't want me to, i'll remove them or whatever.

Deputy, Lookin' good! Didn't I see this car in a magazine? I remember seeing the grain elevator's behind an orange Deputy edition in an article. I'd never even heard of one before that.
