A little update March '06: A day at the track.
Feb 2006: So I bought ANOTHER used tranny from a buddy for $200 that was "better" than the shit box I had been running all last year. Here's the kicker though. It fucking works. I can actually shift into ALL gears flawlessly. Only problem (Haha..you knew this was coming) I have to hold first gear in place with my hand or it will pop out when I move. No biggie. Multi-tasking of this sort comes naturally.
Ok, so I went back to the track on the 26th of Feb 2006 with the same identical setup other than a few minor changes. I tossed the FIC 850cc's in favor for some brand spanking NEW FIC 1,000cc's I snagged from a buddy (to give me more headroom,) the "new" tranny I swapped in, ditched the Type-S BOV (it was opening under boost - found this out a couple days before I went to the track), I could now log my AFR data with DSMlink (made it easier fine tuning) and I had my stock wheels/tires on the car - "winter mode." 17's are bald as hell and since I was driving a good 200 miles or so to the track and back, I couldn't chance getting a blowout on the highway.
Anyway, results sucked, well depending on how you look at it. I had the car tuned pretty decent at higher boost this time and it was running well from my midnight 3rd gear tuning sessions on the highway at 30-31psi in sub 25* weather on 110 octane. *phew - long sentence.* So I left everything as is and drove to the track. I did some testing/shakedown 3rd/4th gear runs on the country roads after I got there and..... KNOCK CITY!!!!! Whoa...WTF? Weather was much warmer - in the mid 50's, and I was running some C14 gas I got at the track. The tank had been completely drained off pump gas as well. Dumbfounded, I did the most logical thing: Turned the boost DOWN to ~27psi to get rid of that knock retard. Car immediately felt slow BUT, the logs were clean, a few bleeps of knock here and there but nothing crazy. Mind you I was doing this in the backroads next to the track. Finally, went back to the track and decided to go stage the bitch. No cool down - Just wanted to find out where it was. Stage, yellow-lights, antilag, clutch out - spin..spin..spin! What is that? Is it my clutch slipping or am I actually burning off the tires in second gear? I lifted off the throttle a little bit in second, instinctively, then got back into it and shifted through 3rd and 4th gears non-eventfully. Crossed the traps and the run felt ok, but the car didn't really feel like it was pulling as hard as it had been a couple nights ago, nevertheless...got my timeslip expecting the worst and saw this!
11.96 @ 125.45mph! Yikes! Not too bad.
An hour later, on my other ONLY clean full pass (NO CHANGES were made, just a cool down period)I ran this.
12.02 @ 126.40mph.
Basically, no traction whatsoever in first and second gears. Useless. Funny thing is the car didn't really feel as fast as it was a few nights ago on this run as well - so I was plenty surprised and happy that it was running that well....consistently. Now about the ETs...that's a different story. I definitely need some good tires. I want to go back and run it ONE more time before installing the SMIM and ported head I have sitting here. I think it can do 128-129mph traps as is if I can only get out the hole better and not fall out of boost and bog coming into third. Hopefully...
