This is probably my favorite BMW race car of all time: the 1975 LeMans 3.0CSL commissioned by French racer Herve Poulain and designed by American artist Alexander Calder in the year before his death. It ended the race early with a DNF and was never raced again.
If you don't already have it figured out, this is a model.
It was built (by me) in 1990 from a 1/12 scale Entex kit originally intended to be a BMW factory IMSA entry. I copied and executed the stunning graphics scheme with masking, spray painting (no airbrush yet!), and (for the blue areas and computer-cut numbers) vinyl tape. The original artist's initials (AC) on the rear fender are handpainted. All the lights on the body are operational either as incandescent bulbs (4 headlights) or as LEDs (front corner lights, taillights, and the 3 door number lights). It was displayed at BMW CCA Oktoberfests in 1990 and 1991.
The photos are at the Manitowoc River mouth on Lake Michigan, across from the submarine, Cobia (visible behind the rear of the car in one photo) moored at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
