The 1991-92 Sport Spotter's Guide

I have done some research because there has been a lot of confusion over these cars, while this guide is pretty accurate it is a work in progress and if anyone notices any errors or knows anything else to help spot one of these then leave a message in the guestbook.

The 1991-92 Sports were marketed towards the younger buyers of Thunderbirds, who maybe wanted a Mustang GT but needed more room. Buyers interested in a SC, but wanted the V8 would also buy a Sport. It is the highest performance V8 Thunderbird in those two years.

There were 77,789 Thunderbirds built in 1992, 5,905 of these were Sports. There were 82,973 Thunderbirds built in 1991, there are no known production records of the 1991s. It is estimated that there were roughly 6,000 produced in 1991. The 91-92 Sports feature the 5.0 V8. SC style suspension package without the firm ride implementing J code springs all around, special shock absorbers, and SC front (1.12")and rear sway bars (.94"). Sports are generally low option cars, which saves weight. Most of the options available on a Thunderbird were available on a Sport. The brakes on a sport are standard V8 disc/drum. SC rear discs are an easy swap.

There are some characteristics that can help you tell if that Thunderbird Sport you're looking at is actually a real sport.

The 5.0 HO sport models were available in 1991 and 1992 only and there are differences between them, so I will cover the two years starting with 1991.

1991 cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII
I have borrowed a picture of screwloose on TCCOA's really sharp 91 sport to demonstrate the differences.

1. All sports have the 5.0 High Output V8
2. All 1991 Sports have a red moulding around the body
3. All sports came with a sport badge on the driver's side tail light
cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII
As you can see they are the same type used on other 91s but they have the sport emblem

4. All sports should have a V8 badge on the front fenders.
5. All sports came with 15 inch cast aluminum wheels
6. All sports are manufactured as Base model V8s and the VIN number will have 60T in it xxxxx60Txxxxxxxxx if it has 62T then it is a LX 5.0 and if it has 64R then it is a SC
7. All sports had full instrumentation, if your gauge cluster doesn't look like this then your car isn't a Sport
cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII
8. All 1991 sports will have a carbon fiber insert on the steering wheel.
cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII
9. On the Door tag it will have the springs listed as JJJJ
cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII

1992 cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII
1. All sports had the 5.0 High Output V8
2. On the door tag it will have the springs listed as JJJJ
cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII
3. All sports had the 15 inch cast aluminum wheels
4. Some 1992 Sports came with Michelin XGT-4 tires
5. All 1992 sports have fog lamps.
6. All 1992 Sports have a V8 base model VIN number which has xxxxx60Txxxxxxxxx and the front bumper from a LX or SC instead of the base model bumper.
cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII
This is almost a sure fire way to spot a 1992 sport. If the VIN number contains 62T then it is a 5.0 LX, If the VIN number contains 64R then it is a super coupe.

7. Some have stated that a chrome rear bumper moulding indicates a 1992 sport, while sports do have this, so did all of the 1992 LXs.
8. All sports came with a sport badge on the driver's side tail light
9. All sports should have a V8 badge on the front fenders
10. All 1992 sports had a carbon fiber look dash trim panel and carbon fiber look trim on the console.
The horn pad should have just a picture of a horn since it's not an LX.
cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII
11. All sports had full instrumentation, if your gauge cluster doesn't look like this then your car isn't a Sport
cb400f75's 1989 Lincoln Mark VII
12. Most sports came with dual color stripes right above the rocker panels. The factory stripe colors I have seen are: pink/purple, blue/light blue, purple/dark purple

Very clean Mark!!! Best one I've seen in a while! Always loved the Mark VII's. I was a Lincoln tech when they were new, and used to take extended test drives after service! You've really done yours nicely!
