Even with a 'stock' setup, this car gets strong approval of its setup, balance and handling characteristics from all who drive it competively.
The car was purchased used with the 'standard' suspension. Soon after, I was able to hunt down all items needed to convert to a 'SPORT' model. With the upgrade in springs, Bilstien shocks, larger rear sway bar and shock tower brace, the difference in handling was dramatically improved. Interestingly, all of these items are OEM items. This is a very impressive OEM suspension setup...kudos to Mazda engineers. This, combined with a 'race' alignment, makes this a solid car. Great fun.
In addition, I have added Falken Azenis Sport tires (205/50/15) to the OEM wheels for autoX (and daily driving). Ironically, a PCA autoX instructor driving my car flat-spotted the (2) front tires for me. I was able to keep from achieving this undesirable characteristic for months of racing. I am currently on the search for an additional set of wheels for separate autoX use.
