THE BBK! ( Big Brake Kit)

MAXRB8's 1995 Nissan Maxima

Here's a pic of my BBK kit consisting of 30mm 300ZX TT (92) 4 piston Brake Calipers, 13" Cobra rotors drilled and slotted from Stopcheck, SS brake lines from Matt at BlehmCo @ Maxima.org, brake caliper relocation brackets from Jeff92se also on the org. Carbon Z rated metallic brake pads by Performance friction and 1" wheel adapters(tossed these POS adapters)

Update: Jun 20th, 2005, the 1" wheel adpaters suck! It's not hub centric so I'm getting too much wheel vibration, and it extends the wheel too far, along with no hub centric rotor rings the ride is scary as hell. The hub centric rings for the cobra rotors cured a lot of the vibrations and noise! but the spacers are still horrible. To make matters worse, when trying to get these adapters off two the the studs stipped! It took me 3 hours with a tiny hacksaw ( that is all that could fit in the space) to cut the bolts off, never will I use that junk again!

Finally here's the H&R hub centric spacers with replacement wheel studs! Those generic crap spacers caused many headhaches!

Update: Aug 15th, 2005
We'll after having my Ball joints, bearings and hubs replaced in early July. Plus having the car on blocks for 6 weeks waiting for the hub centric 15mm spacer from H&R (springs) with longer wheel studs and waiting for the hub rings for the rotors.

First step is to unplug the ABS sensor and other electrical plugs at the Master cylinder (4 total). The depress the brake pedal a couple of times to reduce pressure. Next is to disconnect the rubber brake line and replace it with the SS brake line, you'll need a 10mm line wrench, don't try a regular 10mm as I did it will only strip the head! Also a container to catch the fluid, I had the SS line already attached to the 300ZX caliper, so minimal fluid was lost.

Here's a pic of the 10mm line wrench required vs a regular 10mm and in the pic next to it is also a handy gadget used for bleeding your brakes.

Next step was to install Jeff92se's caliper relocation bracket using some nuts bolts and lock washers from home depot, and yes the bolts are the highest strengh rated 8 even though they were from Home Depot. Notice due to the larger rotors 13" vs 10.8" I had to cut the lip off the heat shield to allow the rotors to fit, but I wanted to retain as much of the shield as possible, others have cut it off completely. I used common tin snips.

My bearings, ball joints and hubs were shot, here's a pic with the new hubs. Note in the second pic my hub centric ring for the rotor doesn't quite fit I had to send it back and wait for another. Speaking of ball joints... the dealer only sells them with the control arms! GOUGE! Thanks to Arm Can on ebay I got a pair of ball joints for $40 shipped and my mechanic pressed them in, saved me over $200! thanks again Arm Can.

At this point I mounted the caliper using the existing 19mm bracket bolts and approx 3 additonal washers each so the bolt doesn't go all the way through the caliper and hit the rotor! Then I installed the pads and bled the brake, my 8 yr old son gave me a hand he depressed the brake pedal while I used the bleeder gadget on the 10mm bleeder valve. Approx 6 pushes and all the air was out. The bleeder tool is worth it's weight in gold and no mess!

Here's the finished product! NICE! with the new H&R 15 mm spacer I have no lie a hair width gap between my wheel and the caliper but it looks much better than the previous 1 inch gap.

Wheel on, filling that massive gap with the 18" wheels plus huge increase in stopping power. Just repeated the same for the other side. I followed a "Google" search procedure for "Bedding brakes". This has been an awesome mod with fantastic results and really cost me no more than replacing stock parts! Everything is complete and totally worth the wait. Not only does it look fantastic but it stops as good as it looks. I get a ton compliments on the bbk those that are "in the know" notice it more. Having the Nissan logo on the calipers does throw people off a little thinking they are stock, which they are! Just not on the Maxima.

I absolutly love your car. It's exactly what I wish mine was. Could you email me at BarkerMi129@aol.com and tell me where you found your door inserts because I really need them. my carpeting was trashed by the previous owner. Also could you tell me where you got your gauge pod. I cannot find a tan colored one, just black. Thank you so much.

Hi,

My name is Rhe and I have a 95 Max Cali Spec.. I just finished my exhaust upgrade. I really like your BBK upgrade and have a few questions if that's o.k with you.

What size rim must I use for the upgrade? Will the stock do or will I need 16, 17, or 18?

Thank You
