This is the process of my custom gauge pod that i built using fiberglass, MDF, Bondo, and my factory gauge bezel. I actually fiber glassed before i started on the inside of my car.
This is my factory bezel in, and out of the dash.
These wood rings were made from 3/4" MDF.
The large one is for a 5" tach, and the other 4 are for 2 1/16" gauges.
I glued the rings in the position that i wanted them to be in for the final pod. This was not easy! It took me about 2 hours to get them "perfectly" centered.
After i got everything situated the way i wanted, i put some gauges in, and set it in my dash to give me an idea of what the end result would look like. As you can see, not everything is centered......i still had a little work to do.
*** THESE ARE NOT THE GAUGES I WILL BE USING. I HAD THESE AROUND, SO I FIGURED I WOULD SCRATCH AND DING THESE UP RATHER THAN MY NEW ONES.***
The gauges i will be using are as follows:
Center - Autometer Tach 4494
Top left - Autometer Oil Temp. 4341
Top right - Autometer Water Temp. 4331
Bot. left - Autometer Volts 4391
Bot. right - Autometer Fuel level 4416
I was having problems keeping the cloth strectch using staples because there wasn't much room on my rings for the staples to catch. I ended up using 3M spray glue, and i stuck some gauges in the pod to hold the cloth down while the glue was drying.
I ended up glassing the pod with the gauges in, because i thought the glue might release its hold due to the heat of the fiberglass resin. After the resin dried, i went back, and glassed the area where the gauges were.
This is the result of my creation after being sanded and bondo'd. Its ready for paint, and this will be the very 1st thing paintd my new color! I can't wait! =)
