FORDdriver03's 1970 Ford Ranchero

The Ranchero on the day (October of 2002) I bought it in Port Jefferson, New York from the second owner. The 1970 Ford Ranchero GT came with a lot of things that were not found on many Rancheros. These items include the GT Hood, 429 V-8 Thunder Jet Engine, heavy-duty suspension, hide-away lights, tac-o-meter, and dual mufflers. The car was in good shape with little surface rust, some needed body work, a small hole in the seat, and ran strong. In addition to the car, it came with everything that was necessary to complete the car, including several new parts such as two new bumpers. Most of the parts only needed some cleaning, but a few needed to be replaced.

The car came with the original 429-cu. in. V-8 Thunder Jet Engine that pushes out 360 horse power at 4,600 rpm and 480 foot lbs of torque at 2,800 rpm.

My father and I decided it would be best to restore the engine first before getting the car painted. The engine did not need any new parts, just some elbow grease to clean everything. I decided to change the valve covers and air filter to chrome ones. After the car was finished getting painted, my father taught me how to rebuild the carberator.

After restoring the engine, we strip the car down and searched for a painter. After a long search we luckly found Jeff, who did a outstanding job on the car.

This is the Ranchero entering the paint and body shop. The first task for Jeff is sanding the car down and priming it.

This is the Ranchero after the priming job getting its new color. I decided to go with the 70 Ford Bright yellow, because I really wanted it to stand out; on a sunny day, you can see the car coming from miles away.

This is the Ranchero shorty after its paint job and buffing. The hood still needs to be painted flat black, which was an original feature on a GT model.

Its now over a year after I bought the car and its in the final steps towards completion. My father and I now had to take our time putting the car back together taking care not to scratch the paint (Which I found out that many bugs love the smell and look of fresh paint). The chrome on the truck bed needs to be re-chromed, however do to a limited budget that will have to wait until a future time.

Slowly but surely the Ranchero is coming to life again. The interior needed a lot of assembling, but no real problems. We replaced all of the door rubbers, speakers, and the horn. The door handles and 429 fender pieces needed to be replaced due to scrathes and erosion.

Its now summer, and all of the exterior lights and grill are installed and working. The air bag that was inside of the vacum canister that stored the air for the hide-away ligths broke. After a long search, we found a replacement from Pennsylvania that came off of a Lincoln.

The interior is complete with working heat, radio, and interior lights. The only problem is that there is a small hole on the top left side of the seat. With that exception, the interior is in very good shape. In addition, I installed cherry-bomb mufflers and had to get the transmission rebuilt.

After a very good cleaning job, the Ranchero is now finally completed after 2 years (August 2004). The project was extremely fun and rewarding. I love taking it to car shows and simply driving the car anywhere, and the 429 can really make a bad day fun. I even won a 1st place thropy for best muscle car at a local car show.

Love your truck! When I was growing up my dad bought a '70 GT and I've always wanted to find one for myself...reminds me of a cross between my previously owned beloved Mustang (a '70 convert) and a truck...the best of both worlds, lol. Don't have the Mustang anymore and have gone the way of Chevy's, but I will always remember my Mustang as my first muscle car. Check out my Z28 and '92 T/A convert if you get a chance, and thanks for sharing your wheels.
