1978 Ford LTD Landau 2 Door Pillared Hardtop "The Hooptie". Web page one is a summary, page two is all about her engine, page three is exterior shots, and page four is interior and stereo. Above is a side shot of her, complete with original style hubcaps, fenders skirts, and 5% limo tint. You don't want too much sunlight when cruising in luxury. She is 18' 11" L O N G and 6' 8" W I D E. For the curious, The original Price on a base Ford LTD was $5898. Shipping Weight was 4029 lbs (My model weighed 4,167 lbs). The LTD Landau had a 24.2 gallon gas tank, and she needs every last drop of that. It also has a 22.1 cubic foot trunk. There were 27,305 Units Made.
Here she is in all of her 400 (Now 408) cubic inches and two tons of boulevard crushing, smooth cruising Detroit steel. The right rear shot shows her new chrome exhaust tips, fed by catless flowmasters.
Here are some shots of her full hood length. Mercy upon whatever gets in the way of her.
Here are shots of her old engine on the left, and on the right her new engine - a Ford 351M-400 (400 original cubic inches / 6.6 liters) bored out .030 over to make 408 cubes - that is 6.7 liters. An Edelbrock #2171 Intake Manifold and Edelbrock Performer #1405 600 CFM Carb is up top, along with a K&N filter and filter top. The new powerplant also has an Edelbrock #8844 water pump, and an Edelbrock Performer-Plus #2172 camshaft and lifters. It also has Aussie Cleveland 302C "Quench" heads (Ford's version of HEMI). All rebuilding done by CWTIndustries.com Please see web page number 2 for more engine information.
She can hold six passengers comfortably.
Her giant rectangular maw...ready to devour miles of boulevard. Her headlight covers are open, and she is awake!
A couple views of her tail end.
A couple views of her new exhaust tips. Fed by a set of catless FlowMasters.
Her restored engine is complete, but this is what she looked like when she developed a cracked head and started blowing coolant into the cylinders when she died in the fall of 2000...the cracked head led to coolantus exhaustus from the backus endus. Special thanks to Hoffy for preserving this moment in pictures. Yes, you can see me standing on the drivers side if you look closely.
This is just too funny...there is a closeup of me standing in a cloud of coolant and exhaust (from the above picture) zoomed in...
The Hooptie's engine restoration is now complete: She rides again! Please check out web page two for engine information, page three for exterior pictures, and page four for interior and stereo pictures.
