Hello everyone, Glad to be here. I appreciate all the knowledge collected here, and hope to be a part of it.
I was hoping to get back into drag racing, and we were looking for something we could tub out and put a roll cage in. I found two prospects, a 68 Firebird, tubbed and tubed, or a 67 Mustang "race ready". So, I went to look at the Mustang. I fell in love at first sight. I went to see the car at night. From the dim porch light 20 feet away I could see cracks in the roof, and a dent here or there...But when I turned the key and that car roared to life, I had to have him. When I put it in gear the transmission snapped to attention. I wasn't allowed to take it on the highway, it had no insurance. I knew from my trip to the end of the driveway and back I had to have this car. I gave them $1500 without ever popping the hood. My husband wasn't upset at all.
The next morning we went out to see exactly what we had. I've never made such a good deal!
The engine is a 289 V8 200hp with an Edelbrock intake and a 2bbl carb. The transmission is a 3spd FMX and it has positive traction. Brand new Eagle GTII's, new rims.
On the bad side, Several of the gaskets on the front of the motor are actually cereal box cardboard. The carburetor leaked, everywhere...
and the bolts in the torque converter were supposed to be in a swingset. The car had a gut wrenching knock to it...It was the plate rattling around the too-small bolts. Whew!
The car had a tree fall across the roof in the past and some really rotten bondo job was slapped up there. The front apron was puckered in on the right front corner and the chrome was all rusted up.
The interior is beautiful, partially restored with new carpet, new correct seat covers, new door panels and a pretty decent headliner replacement.
(For not taking the glass out)
Needless to say, I don't plan to run it on the drag strip. Few mods of my own and I will have The Chick Car From H*ll! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, I need help with an exhaust system a little quieter than I currently have. What's best?
