Reliable Car Show

Today I went to the DJCC's second car show at Reliable Chevrolet. I have made a video diary for my web page see below.

I've been going to several car shows the last few weeks. Below is one I attended September 22, 2007

Tack it Up, Tack it Up
Buddy, going to shut you down!

Installed New Tach

My tack was not reading anywhere close to the correct. To fix the problem I bought a new one on Ebay. It was an Ultra High Performance Type-R 5" Racing Tachometer with removable and fully adjustable shift light. It is designed with a premium Carbon Fiber gauge face. The seller was monsterdeal$.

Other than a little custom bending and drilling on the base bracket it went on very easy.

Busy work

Today is the first day this year where I could come home from work and it was cool enough to work on my car.

I started with putting the glove box back together. I had to take it out to get to the wires and attachment screws of the new Tach.

I also pulled out the car to work on the front seat. The latch on the passenger side keeps slipping so, when I stop the seat slips back and forth. I cleaned the latch up and tried to bend it to work better but no go. I put a wedge under it for now.

Finally I took the inside door panel off to fix the drivers side outside door handle. One of the attachment screws had come loose and fell out. Luckily I found it in the door. While I had the panel off I greased all the doors moving parts.

TMCC Drag Races

Today was a great day for racing. There were 5 DACC members in attendance: Tom, Tom W, Dennis G, Larry R, and David G.

I ran 14.91, 14.87, 15.01 then a 14:61. I won my first elimination. The second elimination I drew the guy in the salsa car a brown Trans-Am. I know this guy is good so I got up on the wheel and hit it hard and ran a 330 3 tenths faster than usual. I stood on the breaks the last 100 feet but still broke out. Ending my day.

The whole race took a long time; one of our club members broke and oiled the track and the tree broke.

The Best and the Worst

Tom W, David G and I went to Kennadale to race the last race of the year in the TMCC.

My first practice run I spun the tire on the top end of first gear. I just shifted and lost a couple of tenths. The second practice trip I missed third gear but only lost a couple of tenths. The first elimination round I ran a 9:532 on a 9:53 dial but cut a red light.

David won his class and was runner up in the Big Dog race.

DACC Annual Meeting

Today DACC held its annual meeting at the CHROME classic auto insurance offices in Dallas, Texas on LBJ/635. Abraham George CHROME’s agent and a DACC club sponsor bought everyone BBQ lunch.

Joshua Ottmann owner of Ottmann Detailing gave a seminar on techniques on how to polish a great finish. I learned about a clay wipe to pull out the dirt stuck to and in the paint.

I was asked to run for a Board Member Position and as fate would have it, I was elected to the position. I will serve a 2-year term.

In the TMCC the club scored 10th and I was 25th out of 36.

I am off for Thanksgiving and for the last 2 days, I have been running down an ongoing electrical problem. If I don’t drive the car, the battery will run down in a couple of days. I did a test and I'm loosing .67 amps somewhere. I thought it was through the starter but found out that the main power to the lights is fed off the main post of the starter through the ignition switch. I found that wire, which is red, from the ignition switch to the main part of the fuse block showed the .64 amp loss. I’m quitting looking for the current loss for now. I guessing the current loss is from cracked wires bleeding or a light bulb just on a little bit. Anyway, finding the problem seems too daunting for the time being, maybe another time. I didn’t get much accomplished but learned a great deal.

The previous owner replaced the old external voltage regulator with Bosch relay, that the best I could find out about is for the power windows of a Volvo. I have some issues of how it was wired. I have burnt wires up and knocked them off the relay in the past without seeing where they came off so I'm sure I didn't put them back on correctly. I'm hoping this is why my charge goes on and off while under load.

Above is a diagram I made of the relay of of a wiring diagram.

I finally got the nerve to start putting in my posi unit a bought a year ago.

But, first before I started I took off my Alternator to take in to be tested and fixed.

I have read several times and even outlined the procedures for putting in a posi track unit. I found this web page to be most helpful: How to install a posi link

My unit sitting in its box got a slight coating of rust. I used WD40, a wire brush, and paper towels to remove the rust. It cleaned up well. I had to realign the spider gears in the unit. While cleaning the unit I could see groves on the carrier bearings rollers. They will have to be replaced. I hope the rest of the unit is ok and I didn’t get jiped.

I already had the car on jack stands from trying to find my current loss problem. I took off the rear wheels and brake drums. While spinning the axles I can hear that the axle bearing are shot, so I’ll have to replace them as well.

With that knowledge and the lack of parts, I called it a day.

The End

December 2, 2007

I started on the differential today. I only drained the lube, took off the back cover and undid the set screw but the journey of a 1000 miles starts with a single step.

The Dallas Area Classic Chevy Club, had a big day Saturday. We had two-planned events scheduled. In the morning, we built a wheel chair ramp and in the evening, we had a Christmas party.

Even thought I like to sleep in on the weekends I rose early to join a dozen or so of my club mates at the “Dallas Ramps” warehouse. The Dallas Ramp Project is entirely a volunteer effort that is intended to provide free wheelchair ramps for those handicapped persons in the Dallas area who are unable to afford the cost of constructing a ramp.

Mostly I was a gofer. Each crew had a leader who is a full time volunteer. Our group’s leader Peter has been building ramps for 10 years. Peter had all the tools we needed. All the helpers needed to bring was a battery-powered drill. Peter even had extra of those. Our ramp was only 12 feet long and we finished it in a couple of hours.

Our ramp recipient Slick now has an easier egress into his house.

After going home and resting for a couple of hours about 15 club members and wives gathered at the club’s treasure, Dean’s house for a party. We had a great spread of food, excellent fellowship ending with a “White Elephant Gift Exchange.” I got a DVD of “Cannon Ball Run” and two tickets to the movie theater. My wife got a Santa Cookie Jar.

Overall, I had a great day. It is very enjoyable spending time with a group of guys with the same interests in life. We are very diverse and spread out through the Metro-Plex. If it were not for the club, there would be no way I could have met so many people I enjoy to talk to and be with them
