This is my soundproofing project I started over spring break. I decided to install some carpet padding to help further reduce road noise. I think this was a good idea considering a 12X6 sheet was less than $20. This is the before and after of what I have done so far. And this is the side compartment. This is the carpet pad yet to be installed
Updates for 3-21-04 I began laying down material in the front section. By 9:30 it go down into the 30's and I called it a night (this stuff doesn't stick as well when it is cold). Also got new NGK plug wires
Updates for 3-22-04 Well, I put in a long night after work and it paid off. I finished soundproofing the front section and put the carpet back in place. Next I will need to figure out the placement of my new amp and cap and get those in. Ready for carpet
Updates for 3-26-04 My install is almost done. All that is left is to soundproof my doors and install my new infinity 4" speakers in the dash. I also stuffed the rear columns with carpet pad as insulation. I had to do a little customization to one of the dash speaker enclosures because the new 4s have such big magnets. These are ported enclosures that significantly increase output of the dash speakers. Check out the comparison of the new 105 watt infinity speaker compared to the stock speaker. When I bought my 4runner 2 years ago, the stereo consisted of this one stock speaker in the front, the two 5 1/4" stock speakers in the rear, and the factory tape deck. It certainly has come a long way.
Updates 3-28-04 Finally done! Relocated the crossovers in the doors and soundproofed em. The addition of the 4" infinitys in the dash was amazing! The clarity of the high and midrange sound is so much better than with the component kit alone. Overall the project took an estimated 60 hours but the results were well worth it. Here are the pictures of the final day. And this is the stock enclosure in the back of a 4runner.
For high frequency response I have a Pulk Audio component kit up front. I have been very pleased with this kit and have had it for about three years now. You have to have a pair of tweeters in your upper door or dash if you have plenty of bass and good clear highs at the same time and this kit has done the job for me. Installing the 6 1/2' mids in the doors was probably the most challenging project I have done so far. For one, there was almost no clearance for the magnet, even with the 1 spacers I had made at the stereo shop. After that, the challenge was to screw them into the door and hit metal on at least 3 screws. I was able to get 4 but it was a huge pain but worth it. As far as the rear speakers go, the stock ones werent too bad but I wanted better tweeters so I determined how big a speaker I could fit in the stock locations without major modification. I decided on 6 . I bought a pair of Infinity coaxials because they have directional silk dome tweeters. I then pulled back the panel and cut out some plywood to fit. They ended up sounding great.

Those are unique tail lights. I've been searching for those things for mine! Could you refer me to a shop that sells stuff like that?
