Brief History of the 1998-2002 Mazda 626
Full history and details coming soon...but here's a brief update.
This, the last generation of the 626, was basically an evolution of the very successful 1993-1997 series. As such, the same basic chassis and powertrains were used. Most models carried a zippy and economical 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder, while upper-level variants used the silky-smooth 2.5-liter DOHC V6. Trim levels included the base DX, well-equipped LX and sport-oriented ES. Only the latter two were ever available with the V6 engine.
Only a sedan body style was now offered, the former MX-6 coupe model having been dropped at the same time as Ford discontinued its related Probe sports hatchback. Styling was basically an edgier evolution of the previous model's rounded good looks. A mild facelift for the 2000 model year added Mazda's new, bolder grille design and clear-lens lighting all around.
The 626 remained a quick and nimble car during these years, just the same way it had always been since its original introduction in 1979 But with sales beginning to slide in the face of continually evolving competition, Mazda finally had to retire the long-lived 626 name after 23 years. Luckily its replacement, the sharp-looking and fast-moving Mazda6, seems to have had no problem in capturing the hearts of modern drivers.
