Here is my '89 model MX5, 'Miles'.
I'd just bought a new hatchback when I came across this car. Despite always admiring the MX5, I was certainly not looking for a new car at the time. Least of all a 16 year old one.
The previous owner must've understood the charm of this car because she loaned me the keys with a casual smile. "Keep these for a bit - give them back when you're ready. Then it will be sold." I took the keys to be polite.
The first week it was a liability. The second week it became my daily. The third weeek I was driving places just for the sake of it, and during the fourth week my new hatchback went up for sale. I couldn't give those keys back - I was trapped.
Such is the character & charm of the MX5. Few people can drive one and walk away un-moved. While many can say "My car is bigger / faster / more masculine / newer than this", lovers of the MX5 love it for one reason alone: It has never tried to be anything other than itself. It does this better than any other car. To understand the full attraction you have to throw away your preconceptions and drive one as I did.
The first car I'd ever driven was my grandfather's MGB. Driving the MX5 immediately brought back all the memories & nostalgia of that first drive. For me, the MX5 is the volkswagen of all sportscars - not only the first affordable one, but the first since 1970 to get it passionately right.
I now can't help but spend my weekends polishing mine and admiring its sexy curves. Despite being the oldest car I've ever owned, it brings a smile to my face like nothing else. I'm hopelessly trapped.
I hope you enjoy my ride. I do.
