EBay Projector Headlights

These aftermarket projector headlights made available on ebay hence “ebay projectors.” They also have LED angle eyes, not to be mistaken for DDE or CCFLs.

EBay projectors come in two shades, black and chrome.

FITMENT – Not all Maximas are built the same and not all headlights are build the same. Many guys have said that there are fitment issues. One of these issues is gaps between the headlight and the bumper. Keep in mind that these are aftermarket headlights are modeled after the 02-03 headlights. Nothing is perfect so you will have to put up with a small gap. Also, you will need to switch out the white plastic clips to the slightly longer gray clips that hold the 02-03 headlights in place.

BULBS – The bulb for the projector is a H3 fog light bulb. The bulb for the hi-beam is a H1.

WIRING – eBay projectors are “plug and play”. If you can replace the H4 bulbs in your OEM headlights, then you can wire these with no assistance.

Aiming Headlights - (Please take all necessary steps for correctly aiming headlights before proceeding to adjust ebay projectors)

In order to adjust the beam levels bothscrew must be turned. Both screws do not have to be turned simutaniously but it would be a good idea to evenly adjust it. The reason is that the projector and the highbeam reflector bowl are mount on the same frame. Example: five turns on the left screw, five turns on the right screw.

Turning the screw clockwise will tilt up or increase the height of the beam level. Turning the screw counter clockwise will tilt down or lower the beam level. When turning the screws 3-5 times you may not notice a difference in the levels. By turning the screws in 10 to 15 increments you will then notice a difference in level.

Be careful not to tilt down the beam level to far. Turning the screw counter clockwise will also disconnect the frame from the screw.

LIGHT OUTPUT and BEAM PATTERN – The performance of these projectors does not come close to what is currently on the market. Because these projectors use H3 bulbs, the light output is not as bright and the beam pattern of the projector is not clean and consistent. A lot of people have said that the beam pattern is all over the place.

HIDs – It is possible to put in a HID kit but the performance of the projector will be much worse than it already is. These projectors were made for a H3 bulb, not a D2R/D2S HID bulb. Even a H3 HID kit will not work correctly. We cannot control your actions, but we strongly advise that HIDs are not a good combination with these projectors. You could endanger the lives of other people and you could get a citation.

INSTALL ON 2002-2003 – These ebay projectors will fit on 2002/2003 Maximas but they are already equipped with some very decent HID headlights. Consider your options very carefully. EBay projectors are not the best course of action unless you intend to do a retrofit.

RETROFITTING – If you are looking for write-ups you will have to search for owners who have posted them on their cardomain or personal website. If you do intend to retrofit, consider the Bosch Single Xenon projector. Some modifications are involved but it’s a perfect swap out. You can try other types of projector, but be prepared to put some time and effort into them. If you want to learn more about projectors and HIDs, go to hidplanet.com.

FINAL ANALYSIS - These ebay headlights would be a great product IF it came equipped with better projectors. But it doesn't which is why lot of guys said it's junk and it's a waste of money so you shouldn't get them. So if you are NOT planning on doing a retrofit, do NOT get these projector headlights. If you ARE willing to invest the time and money into having your own custom set of projector headlights, then get them.

2002-2003 RETROFIT ADVANTAGE - The one ebay projector retrofit advantage that the 2002/2003 Maximas have over the 2000/2001 is the electrical setup. The 02/03 OEM headlights utilize a HID low beam and a 9006 high beam, powered by via the ballasts and ignitors. Since the 2000/2001 uses a H4, dual filament bulb which produces a low and high beam, a custom wiring harness would need to be made to power the bulbs in the retrofitted ebay projectors.

So if I had a 02/03 Maxima and wanted to power the retrofitted ebay projectors, all I would have to do is replace the D2R bulbs with a D2S* bulbs. I would also have to replace the 9006 bulb with a H1. Because the H1 bulb is a single lead, I would have to modify it in such a way to power the 9006 bulb. Instead of rewiring from a 9006 to an H1, another option would be to bore out the hi-light reflector bowl and creating a bulb holder for the 9006 bulb.

After opening up the hadlight, one thing you may want to do which I forgot is mark the threads with a sharpie before you remove the projector. This is just for reference so that you know how much to adjust screws when you put in the new projectors and for aiming and adjusting beam levels.

Once you open up your headlights you will see the how basic the wiring is. One good thing is the wiring are labeled. WHITE = LOW and BLUE = HIGH. It's important to know that the Maixma's H4 harness is a common positive circuit. Even though the BLACK wire is labeled GROUND, it actually supplies the +12 volts to the projector and the high beam. Note: The +12 volt wire is spliced and are screwed to the high beam reflector bowl and the(ebay)projector. The WHITE and BLUE wires are ground wires. So when you turn on the low beams, the low ground completes the circuit and powers the H3 projector. When you switch to the high beams, the low ground disengages and the high ground circuit is then completed.

After much consideration, I decided to go with the Bosch rather than the TSX.

The Bosch fits nice with some play unlike the TSX. Although the TSX has better color and light output, fitment and alignment will be a challenge.

Thanks to my friend he drilled new holes in the frames needed to mount the bosch projectors.

Not sure but I may have to get those 2.25" Chrome Custom Trim Bezels from HIDplanet. Also, before I seel the headlight I need to do the washer mod. I should have done it while I was waiting for the frames to come back from my friend.

D4S/D4R BULBS AND BALLASTS - One of the most FAQs about these bulbs and ballasts are if they are interchangable with the D2S/D2R series. The answer is no, they are NOT interchangeable. The may bulbs look the same and fit in the ballas connectors, but they are built and function differently. Unlike D2 bulbs, the D4 bulbs are 100% mercury free, which makes them environmental friendly and much safer. The power consumption is less upon startup and light output is slightly brighter.

I caved in and decide to replace the original LEDs Super white 5mm 40000mcd LEDs from BestHongKong on ebay.

Here is the harness wiring diagram I used. Credit to Ocelaris from HIDPLANET. I drew out his diagram so I could understand how it works. The purpose of this circuit design was to allow the high beams to be turned on or flashed without the HIDs cutting out. When I turn on the low beams, the +12 volts from the H4 harness triggers the relay and completes the circuit for the HID. When I turn on the high beam, the high ground triggers the relay and completes the circuit for the H1. Test pics below.
