Starlets life story
The reason why we got the starlet was because from the start Jono wanted to win SPL comps , at the time he had a vr commodore which is completely useless for SPL unless you go flat wall (which was not discussed at the time) , we were in Perth for a comp at Audioart at the end of 02 and saw the Starlet for sale , knowing the history of this car and its numbers it made good sense to look into this.
Turns out the car was already fully sound deadned and it had also received the turbo engine swap , bonus , made it something different from the outset.
The starlet being a hatch was bought purely as an SPL car because of the size and the shape of it.
The original plan was to build a car capable of doing 150Db , no problem there pretty straight forward , lots of power to the 2 Kicker S15L7D2s 15? subs that Jono already had , should do 150 at half volume , piece of cake , or so we thought. At the start of the year the best in WA was around 150 and gradually it got higher. All of a sudden to win we had to be doing 155Db so the decision was made in early March to do the flat wall and try for it.
After some research I found the way to get big numbers was big box big port and big power !! The box was built out of the car and is still fully removable, capacity is 365L and port measures 600mm x 400mm and is 350mm long. The surface area of the port is equivalent to the surface area of the subs. Some parts of the enclosure are 54mm thick so flex is limited. Bit of fibreglass and paint and it was ready for burpin.
We did not try any other designs as this one worked so well the first time there was no point , did what we wanted so we left it at that. The subs were chosen as they have good rep for being very strong and needed to handle the abuse we were going to give them. The amps we picked were world renound for being good dollar value for the power you could get out of them, initially they were running @ 1 ohm each then when we got 2 more they saw .5 ohm each , which is not exactly recommended but we needed as much power as we could get.
Maiden voyage was CABIN auto salon in March and first outing it posted 156.5Db which was the 3rd highest number ever run in WA. Goal achieved , or so I thought!!
Having won that comp by a clear 2.5Db I thought Jono would be happy, not so , how hard would it be to get 160 he asked me ?
Sounded simple enough , double the power , that adds 3Db , bit more testing and tuning and should be a cinch. So in the search for 160Db 2 more Crossfire 1000Ds were purchased and strapped on for the ride.
Next outing was an RBCAD event in Perth so we packed up our convoy and headed down confident that we could get what we wanted. Full charge cold subs good crowd here we go BUUURRRPPP . . . . . 159.9Db !!!! You have got to be kidding , no matter how hard we tried we could not get that god damn point one !!
Over the next 6 months we had issues with amps and subs not liking the abuse we gave them and really limited our testing to see what else we could to get more out of it. Over the next few shows it was very consistant and did 159.8 and 159.9 just to really annoy us.
