Suspension and Brakes

'96+ Front Brake upgrade

Well here's a project that ended up costing a lot more than it was worth

rough expeditures:

$200 for both front strut assemblies from a junk yard, complete with struts, springs, calipers, rotors, etc.
$30 Craftsmen jackstands, on sale
$70 Stanley torque wrench (didn't need it, didn't use it, brought it back)
$10 T60 torx bit
$66 cheapo front rotors
$50 semi-metallic front pads
$20 electric impact gun rental
$10 chisel set
$10 pin set
$2 cotter pins
$35 balljoint
$10 grease gun

etc. etc...

Project entails swapping a '96+ w-body front strut/knuckle assembly (mine came off a Lumina) so that larger front rotors can be mounted. W-body brakes suck, so every little bit helps. The updated strut/knuckle design moves the caliper back to fit 11.25" rotors over the old 10.5" or 10.6", I forget.

Comparison between old and new pads & rotors

pads had NOTHING left. The rotors go old 10.6s, old 11.25s, brand new 11.25s.

Nasty looking underbody and DISGUSTING WHEELS..

Those wheels are soon going to be dosed with aircraft grade paint remover and wet sanded down to a mirror finish, then reclearcoated.

Guys at the junkyard killed the passenger side ball joint boot so that had to be replaced.. required a bit of heat persuassion. not that hot, but hell propane torches are fun.

Nice front knuckle job. I plan on upgrading my Lumina too. Did you replace springs/cartages cause i bet mine are shot, and my strut bearings are creaking. I'm going to the wreckers soon, so you say a Cultass and Lumina strut towers are interchangeable? I know the back knuckles are. Thanks.

Hey bro, thanks alot for checking out my Cavi. I appreciate the comments and its really cool that I have a friend at school who enjoys cars and knows a thing or two about them. My car is a torquey SOB and loves to pull and pull hard. For a sport compact I think it holds its own very well. In my opinion, I have the best engine (2.2L Ecotec) offered in the J-body lineup, so that definitely helps out. On the J-body forums, many of the other body platforms get respect simply because they're strong cars (esp. Grand Prix's *cough cough*). RSM Racing, at first, presented themselves very well and had great customer service. I've had more than a few problems with my s/c kit since then and now I will no longer recommend them. Anyway, your car(s) looks great man and keep up the hard work! Later.
