July of 2009 the Western New York MG car club went to Watkins Glen international and took laps of the course, followed by lunch at the track. It was an awesome time driving on the same track as so many of my boyhood heroes like jackie Stewart, Jim Clark, Emerson Fittapaldi and James Hunt. Every Summer our MG club has an Autocross series. In June 2004 they held "the Glen at MCC" the second of three autocross events for 2004.
The course was held at a local community college parking lot, laid out in the shape of Watkins Glen. Our MG was there with yours truly doing the driving. I went for style rather than speed, and did my best not to get lost on the course!
Heres Our MG waiting to start right behind a race prepared Midget! The entries ranged from MGB's, F production MG Midget, Spitfire,Caterham 7, Mitsubishi Eclipse and even a Saab!
I bettered my times each run, but by the third run my fanbelt had loosened, so I had this shrieking sound under hard acceleration, and thought the air pump had bit the dust!
So, for all my style I had slowest time in the MGB class.
We had a beautiful morning, for the autocross, sunny with temps in the high 70's, but as soon as we finished our last run of the day the clouds rolled in and it started to rain.
2004 Watkins Glen ZIPPO Vintage Races.
My friend Richard Powers AKA Riccardo Degaurdrail won the 50th annual Collier Cup at Watkins Glen September 2004 in his MGA vintage racer! Congrats Dick! We all had a great time watching the races and a great experience in town watching the racers reenact the run through the streets of Watkins Glen. This year was dedicated to MG's, need I say more! An absolute great time!
