STEREO SYSTEM PICS AND INFO

 DEH-P7200 Pioneer Head Unit
Four Infinity Reference 6812cf 6x8" Speakers
 Sealed Custom Subwoofer Box
 Two 12" Kicker CompVX Subwoofers
 Hifonics BXi1606D Amplifier
 Knukoncepts 4 Gauge Amp Kit
 Power Acoustics 2 Farad Capacitor
 ASP 15% Overdrive Alternator Pulley

The only thing I upgraded in my stereo system up until September 2006, was my head unit. I went with a DEH-P7200 Pioneer Head Unit. I was working at Best Buy at the time and had to take advantage of their huge employee discount in the stereo department!!

September of 2006 I finally decided to upgrade the rest of my stereo system. I went with some Infinity Reference 6812cf 6x8" speakers to replace my stock interior speakers, which were popping every time I turned my volume up to a certain level.

For some bass, I went with two 12" Kicker CompVX Subwoofers. To house the subs, I decided to make my own box (which I have never done before!!). Thru some online stereo forums, I was able to find out what materials I needed and how to design my own box. I went with a wedge shaped enclosure 34" wide, 13" tall, 12" top depth and 16" bottom depth. I also put a wall inside to separate the subs. The volume comes out to 2.7 cubic feet, which is 1.35 per sub, which was within the CompVX's recommended range. I got the carpeting and carpet adhesive from "Audio Expressions" (car audio shop) in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Here are some pictures of my box in the making...

I think the box came out pretty good considering it's the first one I've ever built and I've never done any woodworking in my entire life up until I made the box. I bought 3/4" Medium Density Fiberboard from Home Depot, traced out my cutting plans onto the wood, then went to the hobby shop at my military base to cut everything. After that, I just went home and glued/screwed/caulked/carpeted it at my apartment.

And here are some pictures of the final result with the subwoofers installed and the box in my trunk. I had to remove the metal frame that holds my back seats and fit the box in that way from the inside of the car to the trunk. It went in with ease. Of course I put the metal frame and back seats back in. There's still about 15 inches of trunk space from my subs to the back of the trunk, so I can still throw stuff back there if I wanted to. But of course I try not to so I won't mess up my speakers. I might invest in some nice lookin speaker grills to protect them later on... I also used an "L" bracket on the left and right hand side to keep the box from sliding around in my trunk...

To power the two 12" Kicker CVX subwoofers, I went with the Hifonics BXi1606D 1600Watts Super D-Class Mono Amp. I originally wanted to mount it to the back of one of my rear seats, but it's too big!! So I ended up mounting it to my subwoofer box instead.

I also threw in a 2 Farad Power Acoustik Digital Capacitor because I noticed the lights in my car started to dim whenever I bumped some strong bass music. After the install, the dimming went away. Oh yeah, and I made sure to choose a capacitor that has an "auto off" feature, so it doesn't drain my battery while my car sits after being turned off.

All this was installed using Knukoncepts 4 gauge amp install kit. I knew nothing about stereo systems when I bought all my parts, but I still managed to do 100% of the install on my mustang... Thanks to internet messageboards!! I got a lot of help from the Realmofexcursion.com and 3.8mustang.com messageboards. And me being the neat freak that I am, I couldn't stand seeing wires going everywhere, so I ziptied all the exposed wires all together, and hid the rest underneath the carpet. Here's how they look with my rear seats folded down. The night shot is pretty dark, but you get the idea. =]
