__________________________________________________________

I've had an intermittent trouble with my drivers side headlight opening. About 1 or 2 times a month for the last couple months it just wouldn't flip up. I thought for sure I had the dreaded stripped headlight motor gearing, but I did some research and found the answer wasn't stripped out gearing for this trouble, but that the trouble was that where the headlight closed stop hits the stop itself had worn a dent into the stop bolt. Then when the headlights would try to open the assembly would be to far closed to open.

The fix is to simply build up the dented area, and raise it to stock heights or more.

My first go 'round with this trouble had me wrapping a few thin strips of duct tape around the peg. This worked pretty well for about a month, but the trouble came back intermittently again, (albeit less frequently).

Sure, I could have wrapped more duct tape around it, but I decided on a more permanent solution.

I found some hard plastic tubing I had bought for a different project 6 months back, and determined it would be the perfect fit for this solution.

The trouble is that because I bought the tubing so long ago, I have no idea what size it is.

Here are a few photos to help you get the correct size tubing for yourself.

JLower's 1994 Pontiac FirebirdHere is the tubing shoved into a 1/2 inch six point socket. It was a snug, but not difficult fit.

JLower's 1994 Pontiac FirebirdHere is a picture showing how thick the tubing walls are. The walls are a lot thinner than a rubber hose would be... about the same thickness as fishtank air line tubing -although the hose has MUCH larger inner diameter

JLower's 1994 Pontiac FirebirdSpeaking of fish tank air line tubing, here's a shot of my trying to squeeze the tubing shut with my fingers placed about 1/2 inch from the end. While fish tank air line tubing is soft and pliable, you can see this tubing is VERY hard -it is not a pliable tubing.

JLower's 1994 Pontiac FirebirdLast shot pf the tubing shows the length you'll need to do this fix on both sides. It's about 1/4 inch. You want to make sure it doesn't overhang the closed position stop peg, because if it did it might rub on the mechanism and affect operation.

JLower's 1994 Pontiac FirebirdThe fix for this trouble is really easy to do:
#1 -Pull off the manual headlight knobs dustcap, and turn the knob to open the headlight fully.
#2 -Unscrew the four screws (two on each side) around the headlight bezel, and then pull the bezel out of the headlight area.
#3 -This marks the area you'll be working in. You'll simply reach under the headlight and place the hose piece onto the close stop peg for the headlight close mechanism. Easy.

JLower's 1994 Pontiac FirebirdHere's a picture of what it should look like when done. Note that the plastic tubing does NOT overhang the peg

This should be all there is to it! Now your headlights should come up everytime!

nice looking ride, like the looks of the clears, but not the louves. but to each his own. it's funny how you describe the problems centering the magnaflow, i had the same problem, and every system i've seen has the same problem...off center towards the driver side. annoying but the system sounds and performs great. keep it clean.
