:::::::::::::::2002 Maxima window switch write up::::::::::::::::

Please go down half way for a 4th gen write up.

***Warning*** This LED swap write up is ONLY for 2002 and 2003 maxima's. The 2000-2001 maxima's are set up differently.

Here is a write up on how to change your ugly green factory window switch lights to any color you want. Being that my favorite color is blue, this is what I chose. I got my lights through an eBay seller named "Coldfusionx" and had a very good trading experience. I got 5mm, 6000mcd, 3.3v leds. Perfect for what I wanted, nice and bright.

Now, I chose to use a normal led. Surface mount LED's are available, but they are not as bright. you can find them here: http://www.lc-led.com/ProductListing.jsp?idDepartment=5

Before you make your decision, consider this, if you get a normal led, you have to make sure it is dead center in the middle of the two power prongs. If they are not, and you try and put it all back together, the leds will try to bend into place, and they may break, or damage the board. The leds in the link I provided are much easier to install. Just to give you a heads up. :)

TOOLS NEEDED:

1.) Soldering Iron (Equipped with a small tip is possible.)
2.) Solder
3.) De-solder (very helpful if you have one, if not, then pick up some de-solder braid at radio shack.
4.) Two flat head screw drivers
5.) One medium sized Phillips head screw driver
6.) Nine (9) Led¡¦s of you choice of color/size
7.) Two resistors (for the rear switches) color code: Orange, orange, brown, gold.
8.) A steady hand, and a couple of hours.

Lets start with the drivers side door. Look in the pocket in the door right underneath the window switches. You will see a plastic cap. Place a flathead screw driver inside the small opening to pull up the cap. Underneath the cap you just removed is a screw. Take a Phillips head screw driver, and remove it. Then remove the whole unit from the door. Unclip the two connectors running to the switch unit, and bring it inside.

This is what you should have:

Below is a side view of the switch, I used two screw drivers to help me remove the green part of the switch unit from the black park. When the two screw drivers are stuck in there, I flipped it on the other side, and used another driver to pry it out.

Now, below is a picture of the finished product. I didn't take pics of doing it, only because I did not know there was a need for one. But this process is easy enough. You will see 5 surface mount leds. Use your de-solder on this step if you have one. Remove as much solder from the stock led contacts as possible. Then, with your soldering iron, heat up one side of the contact, and use your pyler¡¦s to pull up on the led gently. Then once one side is off, do the other side. Repeat for all leds.

Below is a picture of the finished product, but I marked all the leds polarity. Now like I mentioned before, make sure you center the leds! See how some of my leds are bent? That's what happens when they are not perfect. Then you get an indirect beam, and ugly switches. Who wants that? :)

And you're all done! Put everything back together and test it out! And do the same exact thing for the passenger side, nothing has changed, just less leds to do. I didn't feel a need to do that step.

Here is the write up for the rear window switches. This was the hardest part in my opinion. Mainly because I broke both switches, and had to figure out how to put them back together. If you do this, then email me or IM me, so I can help you out.

---------write up for 4th gen maxima's. --------

this is a Write up on how to change your factory Green window switches to any other color in a 98-99 maxima.

Alright, first you much pick what kind of LED you want to use. I chose blue. I bought my LED's off of an ebay seller, and I am very pleased with them. They are 5mm, 3.1 volts, and 6000mcd (brightness... the higher the mcd the better.) This was the highest MCD I could find, and they are perfect.

Now, you must take out you window switch. *WARNING*, if you take out the drivers side front switch, you lose control of all your windows, and some other functions! So be ready to finish the project! You can pop out the switches with out taking off the door. Simply wedge a screw driver underneath it, and pull up. Be careful not to damage your leather/cloth. When doing the front cabin switches, pry up from the top to the switch. (Closest facing the dashboard.) When doing the rears, pry from the rear of the switch. (Closest facing the rear seat.) Once you have the switch out, bring it inside.

Tools needed

A dremel
Soldering iron (preferably with a small tip.)
De-solder (or desoldering braid, $2.99 at radio shack)
Solder
Two flat head screw drivers
Medium sized Phillips screw driver
Nine LED's (get more just incase you make a mistake.)
A damp cloth (to clean the tip of the soldering iron from time to time)

Ok, here is what you have:

Start by UN screwing the 4 screws holding in the top plate, and set it aside.

ReDMaX99SEL's 2002 Nissan Maxima somewhere, RI Customized with GReddy Exhaust, AC Schnitzer Brakes, Frankencar Performance Intake, Polk Audio Speakers, Polk Audio Tweeters, Alpine Subwoofers, Tsunami Wiring, Audiovox Security, Alpine Amplifier, Alpine Head Unit, Racing Hart Wheels, Nismo Strut Bars, H&R Springs, KYB Shocks, A'PEX Engine Comps., Toyo Tires, Stillen Body Kit - 84

Next, take your flat head screw driver, and pry it in so you can pop the nubs out from the case. It makes it much simpler if you have 2 drivers so you can wiggle it out.

ReDMaX99SEL's 2002 Nissan Maxima somewhere, RI Customized with GReddy Exhaust, AC Schnitzer Brakes, Frankencar Performance Intake, Polk Audio Speakers, Polk Audio Tweeters, Alpine Subwoofers, Tsunami Wiring, Audiovox Security, Alpine Amplifier, Alpine Head Unit, Racing Hart Wheels, Nismo Strut Bars, H&R Springs, KYB Shocks, A'PEX Engine Comps., Toyo Tires, Stillen Body Kit - 86

Once you have it off, this is what you should have so far:

Next you need to take out the board, and unclip the black/red wires going into the green board.

ReDMaX99SEL's 2002 Nissan Maxima somewhere, RI Customized with GReddy Exhaust, AC Schnitzer Brakes, Frankencar Performance Intake, Polk Audio Speakers, Polk Audio Tweeters, Alpine Subwoofers, Tsunami Wiring, Audiovox Security, Alpine Amplifier, Alpine Head Unit, Racing Hart Wheels, Nismo Strut Bars, H&R Springs, KYB Shocks, A'PEX Engine Comps., Toyo Tires, Stillen Body Kit - 88

Then you will have this:

Now, take the brown board that we now have access to, and look at all the green LED's in them. Notice that inside the led, there are two pieces of metal and one is bigger if the two. The one that is bigger is Negative, and the smaller one is positive. This is very important. Now, notice that on the board, the negative is always on the left side of the led. You must install the new LED's in the same way.

Now, install the led right up to the board, or close to it. (you can either pre cut the LED leads, or bend them so they stay in place that then solder, and then cut them.) I chose to pre cut them. It makes the process simpler. Make sure you do this step neatly, and quickly. Too much heat is bad. Make sure none of the contacts are touching each other unless they should be. And check every connection by tugging on the LED. (Gently.) Here is what it should look like once it is done:

ReDMaX99SEL's 2002 Nissan Maxima somewhere, RI Customized with GReddy Exhaust, AC Schnitzer Brakes, Frankencar Performance Intake, Polk Audio Speakers, Polk Audio Tweeters, Alpine Subwoofers, Tsunami Wiring, Audiovox Security, Alpine Amplifier, Alpine Head Unit, Racing Hart Wheels, Nismo Strut Bars, H&R Springs, KYB Shocks, A'PEX Engine Comps., Toyo Tires, Stillen Body Kit - 95

Alright, now I am sure you want to go and put this all back together right? Well you have one more step. Since we have such bigger led's, they will now not fit in the factory holes. you need to dremel the hole to are big enough to fit the bigger led's. this is very easy, but take you time, and do not make any quick movements, and have a steady hand. if you don't, then you could dammage the holes.

ReDMaX99SEL's 2002 Nissan Maxima somewhere, RI Customized with GReddy Exhaust, AC Schnitzer Brakes, Frankencar Performance Intake, Polk Audio Speakers, Polk Audio Tweeters, Alpine Subwoofers, Tsunami Wiring, Audiovox Security, Alpine Amplifier, Alpine Head Unit, Racing Hart Wheels, Nismo Strut Bars, H&R Springs, KYB Shocks, A'PEX Engine Comps., Toyo Tires, Stillen Body Kit - 91

Now place the led board back in, and try to make sure the led’s are pointing straight, or you will have "hot spots" in your switches.

And now you’re done! Plug everything back in, and re-assemble everything, and test it out!

Ok... *phew* glad that’s over with... now lets tackle the front passenger’s side switch. This is set up a little differently. This one is much easier.

Take out the switch you did for the driver’s side. And take it apart the same way. So now we have the green board again. Let look at it for a second.

Look on the back side where the green led is. Follow the two contacts to the other side of the board. You need to de solder these two contacts, and then the white holder will slide right out. Now cut you new LED down so it fit snugly in the same spot.

You will notice there is a clear flexible piece which makes contact to the board that makes your window go up and down. In the center of this piece, there is a high spot where the led fits into. Cut the top part of this off. Not because there is no room, but it dulls the blue light coming through. I you want to keep it factory, then that is fine, but it will not be as bright. Then just solder it in, and you’re done! Easy huh? :)

Here is a finished pic:

Well now we had a nice break since that last switch was so easy to do. But now we get into the really hard, annoying, and frustrating switches.

This was such a pain in the ***, but it is possible to do them. Well, let’s get started. Take the switches out of the car, but remember, we are to pry them out from the side facing the rears seats this time.

Take everything apart like we did the first two. Now we are left with the green board. If you look closely, you will notice that this LED is a surface mount, so it is not the same as the others. The reason why Nissan did this is because on the other side of the green board there is a small ship that gets in the way of putting a regular LED in.

So now we must be VERY CAREFULL!!! It is Very easy to mess this up! Suck the solder off the 4 contact points of the led.

ReDMaX99SEL's 2002 Nissan Maxima somewhere, RI Customized with GReddy Exhaust, AC Schnitzer Brakes, Frankencar Performance Intake, Polk Audio Speakers, Polk Audio Tweeters, Alpine Subwoofers, Tsunami Wiring, Audiovox Security, Alpine Amplifier, Alpine Head Unit, Racing Hart Wheels, Nismo Strut Bars, H&R Springs, KYB Shocks, A'PEX Engine Comps., Toyo Tires, Stillen Body Kit - 101

Now, take some pliers or tweezers and hold the led, and as you heat up the contacts lift up on the chip and pull it out. I make it sound simpler then it is. Just take your time and do it right. Once you finally have it out get you’re led ready. Cut it down to the right size so it fits correctly. Now solder it to the contacts. But wait! There are four contacts! Which ones do you use? Well, if the two black boxes are on your right uses the upper right contact for positive, and the lower left contact for negative. Solder them in very nice and neat... YOU DO NOT WANT THE CONTACTS TO TOUCH ONE ANOTHER! You need a VERY steady hand to do this. Be careful. And you can cut the top of the clear piece off again if you want... I did.

This is a write up on how to install bulb number 194 into your 98-99 maxima.
If you have a 95-97 maxima, then it is a simple plug and play... not modding needed. Ok, well let’s get to it. It is fairly simple to do, but it can get annoying.

First, get to your gauges, and pull the whole thing out of the car. Bring it inside so it is simpler to work on. Next, take off the clear plastic cover by UN snapping the plastic clips that snap into the black gauge Bessel. Now, take the black Bessel off by un-snapping it from the back of the gauge cluster.

You should now be left with just the gauges with nothing protecting the needles. Start unscrewing each gauge and place it aside for now. DO NOT REMOVE THE MAIN SPEEDOMITER!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Now, once everything is removed, look where the factory lights are and then look at the back and twist the black nubs and pull them out. You should see the small lights attached to them. Make sure you are taking out the correct light bulbs! Then, once all five of them are out, you need to take out your dremel.

***be very careful with this step!!***

Now, use the dremel on the open holes and make them bigger until the 194 bulb will slide through. Once you have done that on all of them, you can put your dremel away. Now, get some sand paper, and scuff up the copper power rings so the solder will stick to them.

Next, get your bulbs and bend the metal connectors so they are sticking up sideways. (Like a helicopter.) Now place them in the widened holes you just made, and make sure the bulb's connectors are touching the copper. Solder them on very strongly, for that will be the only thing holding them in place. Do this for all 5. Now put everything back together and plug them in! MAKE SURE YOU PLUG YOUR DIMMER SWITCH BACK IN BEFORE TESTING, UTHER WISE THEY WILL NOT WORK! :)

Here is what it should look like:
