I am in the middle of putting together a solid front axle swap. I am putting in:
Dana 60 front axle with 4.88's, 35 spline outers, Warn Premium hubs and an ARB air locker
14 bolt FF rear axle with 4.88's and a Detroit Locker
NP241 Passenger drop transfer case
Truck Specs:
K1500 Heavy Half
5.7L Vortec
4L60e 4 Speed
NP243 Transfer Case
8.25in IFS front axle
9.5in 14 bolt SF rear axle
My truck is a 1997 Chevrolet 1500. It has the Silverado, Z71 and trailering packages. I purchased the truck in July of 2003 with 133,000 miles on it and an engine and transmission that were still in fantastic shape. This truck has never let me down and is definitely my big project.
The motor is a Vortec 350 turning somewhere around 300 ponies at the crank, but more importantly around 370 ft/lbs. of torque. A free flowing intake and spacer free up the inhaling side. A hypertech tuning module has been installed as well which helps the speedometer read correctly and gives me a little more power. It currently has a dual exhaust system with the 2 stock cats going to two flowmaster 40 series mufflers which empty under the truck a little before the rear axle. To protect my rear axle a thick cover has been added, as an added bonus it helps cooling too. The axles are a 14 bolt sf 9.5" in the rear (with the optional G80 locker) and the gm 8.25" IFS up front. The G80 unit is not the same as the one used in the 10 bolt, it is much stronger as the carrier is a much stouter piece.
