SCORPIO Ford 2.3 Dual Plug Turbo
Special thanks go to several people for this project; Dimitri Wittal (NY ith) for the encouragement and technical advice for the turbo engine transplant and wheel fitment; the Ford Dual Plug project made possible by Jamie Nieves (Texas ith) and Brad Anesi (NJ ith).
This project is almost complete, at this stage it needs to be tightened up in terms of sprucing up the wiring harness and detailing. The car is a daily driver and is very quick, fast and comfortable.
Rear view without the red hatch cladding or any emblems. Removed cladding, cut out and kept the handle with license plate lights. Opted for a cleaner tighter look.
Drive train modifications include Ford 4 cylinder turbo engine with Ford dual plug head (8 spark plugs & no distributer). Head is ported and has a roller cam. Exhaust manifold is ported. Polished valve cover with Ranger gasket. Small starter, dual solenoids since battery was relocated to the trunk. Turbo Coupe engine management system with REGULAR or SUPER fuel dash switch control option. Retains the A4LD overdrive automatic transmission, slightly modified for better fluid supply, advice given by Larry Davis:)
Instrument panel with (Ford) Merkur XR4TI boost gauge added.
SONY head unit. Stock audio amplifier removed and replaced with a Ford cup & coin holder instead, shown in resting position.
SONY head unit. Shifter & knob (real cue ball) modifed in order to make the Ford cup & coin holder operational while in PARK.
Ford Cobra wheels with 255/45/17 Firestone tires. Scorpio hubs and hubrings customized to accept Mustang wheel studs in order to accomodate Ford Cobra wheels with Ford lug nuts. One set of hubs available for sale. Tinted windows and monochrome GM silver paint.
Ford Euro lights & Ford blinkers. Available for sale are more Euro lights as well as stock Scorpio and XR4TI parts.
Another view of the front.
Ford round tooth timing belt setup & Ford serpentine drive belt setup. Both are from a Mustang and so is the air conditioning compressor with a modified XR4Ti bracket.
The alternator is from the XR4TI mounted upside down with a modified holder & pulley from a Mustang. The complete power steering pump assembly is from a Mustang. The engine block is from one of my Merkur XR4TI part cars. The dual plug head is from a 2.3 Mustang. A Ford crank sensor is used and therefore no distributer. The ignition system uses two coil packs, one pack for each set of four plugs.
Cold air duct from the, larger than XR4TI, TC vane meter to K&N filter.
TC intercooler ducting for cowl induction with puller fan mounted on bottom of IC. The fan pulls in outside air, cools the intercooler and blows air onto the turbo. Fan is controlled by led switch on the instrument panel.
Another view of the engine area.
Cowl area where the Ford TurboCoupe Intercooler draws air with fan while idling and driving.
Multi-use alarm system.
Lower front view.
Monochrome rear & tail lights. Dual 3" exhaust.
