ihatedsms's 1990 Eagle Talon

WARNING:
If you are looking for riced out, slow Talons and Eclipses, this is not the place. You won't find any updates on wings, stickers, or Les Schwab ghetto rims here. What you will find is one helluva fast Talon, period.

NEW UPDATE FOR JUNE 30th, 2004

ihatedsms's 1990 Eagle Talon

HKS cams are here! Yes, these were THE LAST pair of BRAND NEW HKS 272 cams for the 4g63 IN THE UNITED STATES and I GOT THEM. WHEW! Good thing I didn't have to buy crane or comps *ew*

NEW UPDATE FOR JUNE 24th, 2004

ihatedsms's 1990 Eagle Talon

My racing fully built short block cam today. Wiseco 8.3:1 forged pistons, Eagle H-beam forged rods, balanced and blueprinted, and all new components (oil case/pump, water pump, etc.). This thing is goiing to RIP!

NEW UPDATE FOR JUNE 12TH, 2004

ihatedsms's 1990 Eagle Talon

The Talon will undergo a major overhaul in two weeks (starting on June 26th). So far, I have a BJ's Stage 3 racing head (65 lb. Crower valve springs and titanium retainers), Ferrea 1mm oversized stainless steel swirl valves, and awaiting HKS 272 intake/exhaust cams. This head has been flow-benched to 280cfm (stock is 225cfm) so a full flow gain of over 20%. The valvetrain is rated to an 8500rpm redline! I also purchased a JDM EVO III 4g63 valve cover. Sweet yo! I never thought I'd have anything "JDM". Well, this is the one and only thing, lol.

ALSO, my AEM EMS, AEM UEGO wideband O2 controller/wideband O2 sensor, 5 bar map sensor, and 2g knock sensor are here as well. This system is incredible. It is a 3-d tuning system for the DSM (many other cars are compatible with select AEM EMS ECU's). This is one of the most powerful tuning systems for the DSM in the world, and it is considered the best plug'n'play system. With the wideband O2 system hooked up, auto-fuel mapping is possible, making it easy to tune the car in less than day. It has traction control, 2-stage launch control, variable low and high boost control, full control of ignition, timing, fuel mapping, and tons more. More can be read about this system at http://www.aempower.com

Check it out!

Stay tuned for the arrival of my racing short block (Wiseco 8.3:1 forged pistons, Eagle rods, ARP hardware, etc.). On its way from Tucson right now. Last on the list will be a very large turbo; that is all I am going to say ;)

To make a long story short, a friend of mine got the bug to buy a 2003 Mustang Cobra and sell his 1990 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD. The price was right and I had become addicted to the hardcore AWD launches this car was known for, so I wrote him a check and drove'er home. Here she is about to smoke a Mustang 5.0 at the track back in October (how ironic, hehehehehe):

The car is by no means stock. All emissions/useless vacuum lines/air conditioning has been removed. That's it.

Just kidding ;) :p

She's equipped with:
3" intake
2g MAS

BIG ported 16g turbo

Huge freakin' Secret FMIC (24" wide x 8" tall x 3.7" deep!!) Rated to flow 1850cfm with only 1.2psi loss, this is quite possibly the most efficient intercooler on the market. It has about 3x the cooling area of a standard intercooler of this size through the use of primary and secondary cooling fins. Expect to see these hit the market late this year. Too bad the bottom of my air dam is all messed up...oh well, adds character.

ihatedsms's 1990 Eagle Talon

3" A'pexi downpipe
3" A'pexi exhaust
A bit dirty, but that is what happens to an exhaust on a daily driven vehicle. Nothing pretty to see here. ;)

ihatedsms's 1990 Eagle Talon

255 Walbro Fuel Pump
550cc Injectors
ACT 2600 clutch
ACT street flywheel
A'pexi S-AFC
Front LSD
4-spider center differential
4-bolt rearend
ProSlot II rotors
Hawk Pads
Eibach sportline springs
KYB GR2 struts
Greddy Profec-B boost control
Greddy turbo timer
About $1200 in electrical upgrades (whole car is 0/1 gauge wired, dual Stinger gel cell batteries, etc.) And no, those are not my Alpine Type R 12's in there...previous owner's and he was using while waiting on his MTX 9500 12's. The Type R's are not bad...but definitely not my style ;)

The external engine upgrades are great, but where this car really shines is the driveline. Normally a weakness for these cars, the tranny on this car is a $3500 Shepherd Racing transmission. Visit SHEPHERD RACING for more info on tranny rebuilds for these cars and other cool stuff (like the video of Shepherd himself doing a 8.76 second 1/4 mile run with his DSM...it is the fastest DSM on street tires in the world and with a record holding 8.76 time, it is just plain fast, no apologies about it).

My tranny is quite similar to his, with the exception that his has double synchros on gears 3/4. Helpful for those 165mph trap speeds. The rest of my driveline is upgraded as well...LSD up front making three total (front, center, rear). 4-bolt rearend LSD from a '92 TSI AWD, 4-spider center differential, ACT 2600 (soon to be 2900), and an ACT light weight flywheel (that is about $5k in drivetrain alone). It is utterly impossible to get my wheels to break free. Perhaps when it is very cold out and I am running 20psi, they will chirp for a second, but that is it. Launches in this car are nothing short of neck-breaking. Perhaps when the new engine/turbo/EMS are up and running at their full potential, all wheel burnouts will be possible, muhahahahahaha.

Here are some more pics of the car just taken tonight in the rain:

Right now I am stuck with two more weeks of summer school so the buildup will have to wait until then...but I'd much rather show you a picture of me watching MTV with my mechanic's cat.

I used to be a crazy car audio guy (and still kind of am). Here is a list of the stereo compnents going into this car for the first system:

SOURCE:
Alpine CDA-9813 (just installed for XM control)
CROSSOVER
ESX internals (waiting on PXA-H700's to come down in price)
POWER:
Undetermined (right now I am putting in some ESX amps, but for the long term I am looking for older Zapco Comp series amps)
HIGHS:
Morel MT-1 tweeters
MIDRANGE:
Seas Excel W18E001 The most heavenly mids I have ever owned/heard EVER!! I also swap in ProHiFi 6.5's some times (don't worry, you're right; you've never heard of them befor and for good reason; I have the only pair ever made. See more on them on page 3 of my other site HERE ) The tweeters/Excels are powered by an ESX Q75.2 and crossed over with a pair of ProHiFi passive crossovers.
MIDBASS
Dynavox 6.5" midbass (Pretty much knockoffs of Dynaudio MW160's but with more midbass and less midrange extension...they BUMP!). Powered by an ESX V350.2 (175 watts per midbass)
SUBS:
Two OZ Audio Matrix Elite ME10.4's, each powered by an ESX Q275.1 (450-525 watts per subwoofer).

NEW for 4/5/04! Door pods! I now have a three-way front stage consisting of Dynavox midbasses, SEAS Excel midranges, and I am waiting on Morel tweeters (I currently have some older metal domes that sound pretty good, but have trouble with off-axis performance). This is the first stage...SEAS will eventually be fiberglassed and aimed upwards and pod itself will be fiberglassed into the door to be on solid piece. It sounds incredible!

I've got more goodies to install, but this will be it for now due to my lack of time and physical ability (if only using power tools were a one handed job, lol).

Well, comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Be sure to stay tuned for more pictures, videos, and upgrades!

PS I have gotten quite a bit of interest in my wheels. Well, sorry to disappoint, but they are Cooper 205 Radials on stock 16" Alloys...

Just kidding! The BIG wheels are TSW Sting 19's wrapped in Nitto 225/35R19's and they are simply gorgeous...almost a little too bling bling because everyone who pulls up next to me just wants to race. I will not apologize for their size and buy 17's; I am not a lightweight Honda owner...I'll smoke just about any Honda at the track so bring it and any other little FWD cars!...sorry for the outburst, heh heh heh. Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Your rims are too big for a DSM. Just doesn't look right. What's wrong with 17's and some nice tires??? But other than that, nice ride. I got a Talon too. Same color actually, it's pretty rare. Recently put a starion FMIC on, not much but it was FREE! How much did you get your IC for? It's nice!
