1989
After the previous year's worst sales performance since 1975, Oldsmobile dropped its low-selling Firenza with no small car replacement for 1989. Also, a name revision was enacted for Eighty-Eight models as the long-standing "Delta" portion was dropped. Overall, the lineup revisions were few with the Cutlass Calais addding an S series coupe, and sedan, the Cutlass Ciera receiving an SL sedan (replacing the Brougham version from the year before) to go with the existing SL coupe, and the introduction of the 3300 V-6 engine (which replaced the 3.0-liter V-6 previously offered). Also, a late-year High Output Quad 4 was introduced on the Calais option list.
CUTLASS SUPREME -- SERIES 3W -- V-6 -- The front-drive Cutlass Supreme was in its first year of production in 1989, and changes from the previous year's intro model consisted of minor elements. A mid-model year addition of a new 3.1-liter V-6 engine mated to a four-speed automatic transaxle with across-the-lineup availibility -- replacing the 2.8-liter V-6 -- headed the list. Again, the Cutlass Supreme was offered in coupe versions only, in base, SL and International Series trim. The aerodynamic design of the Cutlass Supreme offered a 0.306 drag coefficient. Also, power assisted four-wheel disc brakes were featured an all models. Air conditioning became standard equipment across the lineup. Optional equipment included anti-lock brakes, power sunroof, extendible underhood lamp and remote lock control. A split bench seat was standard on base Cutlass Supremes. Black grilles, replaced chrome grills on base and SL Cutlass Supremes. The SL models now had cross-spoke aluminum wheels as standard equipment. Inside, the SL's electronic instrument cluster could now be bolstered with an optional Driver Information System. Steering wheel touch controls, which operated the radio and new optional electronic climate controls. The Cutlass Supreme International Series new standard features included power mirrors, fog lamps, dual cooling fans, remote lock control, P215/60R16 GT+4 tires with 16-inch aluminum wheels and Driver Information System. New options consisted of steering wheel touch controls for managing sound and climate control, CD player and eight-speaker sound system and gray leather interior.

3.1L V6 140HP motor replaces the 2.8L engine in mid '89. Cars with the 5-speed manual still get the 2.8. Three-point rear seatbelts are added. Key lock cylinders gain LED illumination on the driver's side. 16" wheels become standard on International, available on SL. ABS, power sunroof, remote keyless entry, CD player, and trip computer join the options list. International Series can be equipped with heads-up instrument display. Production total: 18,116

The LH0 was introduced in 1988 on the Pontiac 6000 STE AWD. It featured a more exotic and expensive (for the time) multi-port fuel injection. While not known for its high RPM power, the LH0 has strong low- and mid-range torque. That, combined with its reliability, gave the 3.1 L engine an excellent reputation. It was produced until 1996 and was exported in some models.
