1973
General Motors completely revamped its full-size pickups for 1973. Simple, bold lines accented with distinctive body side molding marked the exterior of the new trucks. All models had longer wheelbases, which now measured 117.5 inches for short-bed trucks (up from 115 inches) and 131.5 inches for long-bed models (up from 127 inches). A four-door (Crew Cab) model was now available, built on a long 164.5-inch wheelbase. The redesigned interior featured a dash angled slightly toward the driver. A full-time four-wheel-drive system was available and ideal for those who lived in areas of the country prone to slippery driving conditions. Trim levels remained the same as before, and engine choices ranged from a 100-horsepower 250-cubic-inch inline six to a 240-horse 454 V8. Keep in mind that after 1971, horsepower figures were given as net (engine with accessories) versus gross (just the bare engine) figures.

The GMC Sierra Grande (YE9) was the top of the line luxury trim option A few minor additional exterior moldings complemented those included with the Z84 trim. Inside, the YE9 level included the BC2 Deluxe instrument panel (a wood grain or brushed aluminum finish instrument cluster with full gauges replacing idiot lights) which was also optional at extra cost with the lesser trims. The headliner, floor carpeting, and insulation features were identical to those found on the Z84. Door panels were almost identical to those found on the Z84, although door pull straps and lower panel carpeting were added to those found on the YE9 after 1976. Finally, full vinyl trim covers replaced the lesser trim models abbreviated covers on the lower kick panels.

Interestingly today Sierra no longer refer to trim options, but instead are a model reference to the GMC pickup line.
