The 8th Generation Galant
The eight-generation Galant was released in August 1996, to much funfare because of its engine, the worlds first gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine. In a GDI engine, gasoline is injected directly into the cylinder head, not into the intake manifold. The latest minor changes, In August 1998, added a 2.4-liter GDI engine to a line up that was previously limited to a 1.8-liter DOHC in-line 4-cylinder GDI engine and a 2.5-liter DOHC V6 twin turbo. The model ranges from th VR-G, equipped with a 138HP 1.8-liter GDI engine, to the 276HP 2.5-liter DOHC V6 twin turbo VR4 grade and the Super VR4, which comes with the aerodynamic upgrades.
The baseline VR-G Touring is offered with front engine/front drive or all-wheel drive, and with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission with invecs sports mode. Multi-link front and rear suspension is maintained with ventilated front disc brakes and rear drum brakes.
The top of the line VR4 is offered only with full-time all-wheel drive. The Type V comes with 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic trasmission, while the Type S is available only with 5-speed automatix transmission. Both the Type S and Type V are equipped with the multi-link front and rear suspension and ventilated front and rear disc brakes. This models is also standared equipped with the latest safety system, including automatix yaw control (AYC), active stability control (ASC) and traction control.
