When I needed a new car I knew I needed lots of cargo space, but the Element and Scion xB were still six months from their release dates so my choices at the time were the Matrix and PT Cruiser. I knew it wouldn’t be as reliable as the Matrix but the PT definitely looks cooler with its retro design and the interior is so flexible. I got this base model 2002 with the interior power package. I decided against the costlier models because I hate leather interiors and I was just going to replace the rims anyways.
After checking out the various PT websites and seeing what modifications could be applied I saw limitless possibilities. The coolest PT I found on the web was the Boyd Coddington show car you see here. I mean who better to modify a retro cruiser than the man Boyd himself? Boyd sold this to some lucky guy so I figured I’d use this as inspiration and make my own retro rod.
The theme of my car is to look good only so no engine mods here.
The rear has a P-teazer rollpan and Heartthrob dual exhausts. This exhaust was a pain to install. It was designed for the stock bumper so the stainless exhaust tips had to be cut down 3 inches. This system doesn’t allow access to the spare tire under the car so now it sits in the trunk, a poor design.

The car is lowered 2” on Goldline springs. The wheels are Boyd’s Smoothie 2s. 18x7 in front and 18x8 in rear with Kumho Supra tires.
I smoothed and painted the mirrors myself and paid to have that stupid gray front bumper color matched. I don’t know what Chrysler was thinking wasting money painting the bumpers gray. I’m glad PTs have the color matched bumpers now. It’s taken a year to get the car to look like this and I still plan to get a Plasmaglow kit. The only other things I’d like to do is to get flames painted and get the Pteazer front end, but that would run over 2 large with paint, so I think it’s done for awhile. Keep Cruisin’!
