Keven Kyser's Project 342

yobomba's 1986 Ford Mustang1986 Mustang GT that my parents bought brand new and I managed to get through high school and college...even marriage. Now the car is transformed to be my family's toy for the weekends at verious drag strip events. After an all new drivetrain, a feature in 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords, and a nitrous system the car is in 10's and still street legal.Placing 8th in the 2003 Fun Ford World Finals was the first of many successful accomplishments including placing in top 10 of Fun Ford World Final events in the True Street class, 1/4 finals in Open Comp at Fun Ford 2005.

The success of this project is attributed to my loving wife, Michele, my mom and dad, my uncle, Slick; & Travis Franklin of Gear Heads Performance located in Arlington, Texas (817-465-GEAR)....call this guy for all your performance needs! And by the way....he is the Fun Ford Weekend Racing Series Street Renegade Champion....that should tell you something! He is the BEST! Gear Heads Performance

For your online parts ordering needs go to Texas Hot Rods Ask for Brian and tell him Keven of Fort Worth sent ya!

Back in February 2004, the car had a thrust bearing go bad so we pulled the engine out, sent the transmission off to Dynamic for a refresh and added a few upgrades to both motor and tranny. Transmission got a direct drum power pack, fully rollerized front planetary and a trans brake. Engine got upgrades of new Trick Flow forged crank, Comp Cams Pro magnum rockers, filed rings, clevite bearings, Canton 7 qt. oil pan with main girdle, all blueprinted. To top it off, we sent of the Mac headers to Jet-Hot and had them coated with their sterling coating for heat management and looks in mind. Another couple of add ons were the Lokar trans and oil dipsticks along with new Lokar throttle cable....all look very nice!

Fast forwarding to November 2006, the car has run consistent 10.3 at 129.5 mph and made the semi-finals at the Clash of the Titans World Finals True Street (10-second class). We are currently working weight out of the car to get into the high 9's/flat 10's without any more perfomance upgrades. The car is a definite 9 second car....just trying to keep it streetable and with full interior.....weight with me in it at Houston this past November 2006 was 3405lbs! Just installed all new UPR suspension with k-member, double adjustable upper and lower control arms, caster camber plates, Aerospace Drag Brake Kit, Flaming River Manual Rack, removed the rear bumper along with spare tire and jack with a weight loss of 173 lbs. I still need to confirm it on the track scale it was weighed on last, but we should be in the ballpark since we weighed all parts coming off and going on the car. I am now in the process of installing a new 150 amp alternator to run a Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan from my good friend on e-Bay at Dan's Hard-to-Find Auto Parts and a new Meziere WP311 water pump to free up the belt to run just the alternator and the crank. We feel this total combination over the winter should produce a 9-second time slip!   In October 2008 we added a Kirkey aluminum seat and ditched the factory seats, installed a new MSD HVC II Hi-Perf. Coil & a set of NEW Mickey Thompson Drag Radials.  Stay tuned!

UPDATE: DECEMBER 2007......Car runs 10.07 @ 132mph at 3195lbs with driver.....Going to clip a 9 second pass Fall of 2008....stay tuned.

UPDATE: OCTOBER 2008......Car ran a 10.015 @ 130 mph with a 1.37 60' Friday night before FFW World Finals.  Didn't have enough nitrous to make another pass and hit the magic "9".......Mickey Thompson Drag Radials hit great.......but it is coming.....stay tuned for news after Clash of the Titans down in Houston the weekend before Thanksgiving!!!!

UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2008......FINALLY DID IT.......9.981 @ 130 mph with a 1.365 60' on Saturday afternoon at THE CLASH OF THE TITANS World Finals in Houston.  Could not believe the car ran it in the humid conditions and we had FULL EXHAUST on with 2-FULL Nitrous bottles and the car weighing in at 3205 lbs.  The Mickey Thompson DR's were hitting GOOD off the line.  The Mustang is getting a well deserved rest for the winter.........stay tuned for the modifications updates!  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Update: November 2009.......Installed a new B&M Pro Ratchet Shifter with Shifnoid solenoid.  Should be a much more consistent car from the 1st to 2nd shift.  Taking it to Houston for NMRA Lone Star Shootout event Nov. 13-15....stay tuned.
