The infamous 368cid, 6 litre V8-6-4. Cadillac was caught out badly when they were forced by federal regulations to only produce fuel efficient cars, as a stopgap measure they introduces the V8-6-4, the engine itself is sound enough, the system would (in theory) switch from running on all 8 cylinders to only running on 6 or even 4. In reality the whole thing was a big fiasco as cars sometimes cut out altogehter on motorways etc. Customers started taking Cadillac to court as they were deeply unhappy with the engines, many people cut the wires to the solenoids that de-activated the valves cutting out cylinders, this means the car will run permanently on all 8 cylinders. As mine has had a 4 speed transmission installed at some stage during it's life the fuel economy is better than the original V8-6-4 systems.
I still have to change the timing to the engine, the '81 models do not take well to being over here in Europe as our petrol burns differently, the timing needs to be retarded as otherwise the engine will coke up completely, judging by the state of the sparkplugs this car still needs to be adjusted.
