The BMW Business CD/Radio (CD43) and the Business Cassette Radio (C33) for the Z3 & E36 3 series will work in the (1991-up) E32 & E34 and the E38 (1995-9/1998 mfg date).

This mod was brought to the E32 message board at "Roadfly.org" by member Ben Cannon. Ben also states that for models built prior to the 1991 model year..."I had to splice in a later modular-type BMW connector (1991 and later E32/E34 owners shouldn't need to go to this trouble, as BMW adopted this connector in '91 and stayed with it untill 2003..."

The BMW CD43 (Single In-Dash Business CD/Radio) and C33 (Cassette/Radio) will also operate the BMW/Alpine (I-Bus only) 6-Disc CD changer and the "worthless" BMW/Nakamichi 6-Disc glovebox changer (part # 82 11 0 009 836). The CD43 set-up can provide a total of seven discs for your listening pleasure. The CD changer in the E38 (9/98-up mfg date) communicates on the I-Bus...the (1995-9/98 mfg date) E38 and the E32/E34 CD changers communicate on the M-Bus.

Installing an I-Bus changer and running a new CD changer data cable allows E32/E34/E38 (mfg date up to 9/98) owners to retain a 6-disc changer...or you can "move-up" to the 21st centruy...and hook up your iPod. (see the link to Frankie's website below for more info)

***F Y I *** Click this link to read Eric's post (w/pics) on Roadfly about his install of a CD43 unit in his 1994 (E34) 530i

***F Y I *** Click this link to read Brian's instructional write-up on how to install an I-bus head unit (CD43, C43, C33) into a (non NAV) 1995-1998 E38 w/DSP or w/o DSP...for possibly use with an i-Pod, too.

***F Y I *** For more details, pics, and instructions for installing the CD43, C43, and C33 head units...click this link to Frankie"s Web Site Deluxe...lots of good info here.... though geared toward the E36 the info can be extrapolated to the e32 & e34.

WARNING: the in-dash single CD/Radio for the E46 3-series (part # 65 12 6 909 882) looks like the one for the Z3 & E36 but IS NOT compatible.

These are the CD43 radio/CD unit (part numbers) for the Z3 & E36 that should work:
65 12 6 909 884 *
65 12 9 415 433
65 12 9 410 685
65 12 9 402 067
65 12 9 059 410

note how radio info displays in both the MID and the radio AND that the cover does close down over the knobs protruding from the radio unit...the redundant steering wheel radio control buttons still work, too.

**The pinkish hue of the MID units display is probably from the camera's flash and not caused by the install of the CD43.

BMW in-dash radios 1991-2001 (maybe up to 2003 but I'm not sure) wiring harness diagrams...radios are interchangable but trunk mounted CD changers may not be compatible depending on I-Bus; M-Bus; or navigation technology installed in vehicle:

1991-1995 index for 17-pin Radio harness and 10-pin CD cable: check to see if your existing harness has the same wiring pin line-up...you may need to disconnect the CD changer cable from the harness if the radio is compatible but the changer is not.
