Interior

The goal with the interior was to lose weight. I removed everything including the seats, panelling, carpet, insulation, spare tire, and I even used dry ice to freeze and remove the tar dampening material in the floorpan (probably 30-40 lbs. worth). I'm going for a motorcylce-esque power-to-weight ratio.

The only things going back in are two racing seats, gagues, harnesses, and a fuel cell. I'm not quite there yet.

There's a lot of progress here; first, the cabin has been absolutely stripped (scorched earth) and re-finished with a thick spray-in trunk coating. Also, I've removed all HVAC and accessories, cut off the passenger side of the dash, and made room for the sheetmetal dash panel, which will house gauges and toggles. I gave what was left a black paint job to hide the faded vinyl. The seat is the passenger seat which will be mounted to the roll cage when that's put in. I'm still looking for a driver's seat.

I just got done test-fitting my JAZ fuel cell, which is the only thing left in the trunk. Here are some pics of the process. First the test-fit, then the finished trunk with rails installed, then the cell clamped in.

The fuel cell is now fully functional thanks to $100 worth of fittings and hose. Getting a AN-8 fitting to reduce to a 1/4" rubber hose is ridiculous.

Here are the seats and harnesses that will be going in. The MOMO is a brand new T-frame, which will be for the driver (me). The Konig is used, but in excellent shape. It's not quite as comfortable, so I'll be using that in the passenger seat for the occasion that someone wants to/needs to ride along.

Parts are slowly coming in. Here is the completed auxillary gauge cluster that will be mounted on the dashboard...which I have yet to fabricate.

Here are my toggles, custom fabricated and pre-wired courtesy of www.12voltguy.com. I am REALLY happy with the way these things came out. I hope to have them installed along with seats, harnesses, and a roll cage in the next 2 weeks.

This has been the most exciting part of the car for the last few weeks. I had a 4-point 1.75" roll cage welded in, and also had seat rails and patches for the floor pan welded.

You can see the cage, seats and harnesses below, as well as the rear firewall, which is just sheet metal rivited/bolted to the bracing in the back of the car.

I had to make these braces for the shoulder harnesses because of their length (too short to reach the floor, too long to bolt to the cage). They ended up looking OK, and are amazingly strong.

The BEST part, by far, is the custom dash. It's made of sheetmeal and strap steel; it's bolted to the car in 5 places and is surprisingly sturdy. It contains the switch panels and gauges and hides a 12V 240 CFM blower which gives me front de-fogging abilities. The orange marker is just for use as an interior light. It took about 3 days to fabricate and install to it's full functionality.

It looks even better in the dark...the one on the right is with the interior light on.
