Stop the false alarms
The RF interior sensor in the '97 740IL is prone to false alarms caused by digital cell phones, automatic doors, and vibrations. The Ultrasonic module used later solves these problems.
You can get the replacement parts from a discount BMW parts dealer for about $100. The detailed instructions are available on the dealer "TIS" system as Service Document# 65 02 97 000. Your BMW parts dealer should be able to print that for you.
(Note that these part numbers may have changed)
Here are the parts I used for my '97 740iL:
65 75 8 379 938 Ultrasonic Module
51 44 8 249 978 upper bracket
51 44 8 243 665 lower bracket
65 75 8 385 535 extension wires, used, but didn't need
51 44 8 254 918 Cover, Beige**get the right color (917=grey)
16 11 1 181 918 base/foam pad, didn't use, not sure where to put it
Here is the abridged method (get the illustrated instructions! Try at your own risk.):
Remove sensor cover (push forward and down), unscrew (torx) and disconnect module.
Remove trim piece. Remove square black mounting bracket (pull lightly down on the headliner, push up on bracket and rotate 45 degrees. Remove on the diagonal)
You don't need any of the old parts.
***Note, new parts have arrows on them that must point towards front of car!**
Install new white upper bracket using the same technique as the removal.
Install bottom bracket with flat-side up. Squeeze together evenly. Shouldn't be very tight or cover won't clip on.
Snap new sensor module into cover
Connect extension cable (if you have it) to the new module.
Connect the wires and snap the cover module onto the assembled roof bracket (make sure it is exactly lined up with the impression in the roof. Don't force it or you will break the clips!)
Done in under an hour! (probably 15 minutes the second time)
UPDATE: It has been over a year with no false alarms!
Please email me if there are changes in the part numbers.
