Vertical Door DIY

You don't NEED two people, but i'd recommend it.

Tools:
Socket Wrench w/ extension. 10mm, 12mm 14mm sockets,
Flat head screw driver
Tape
Knife
Paint Sticks
Loctite, JB Weld, or a real welder setup

Prereq) You may want to tape off different areas around the door, or anywhere you're gonna be using the tools. Since i'm in the process of painting my car, i'm not worried about scratches.

1) Remove the fender.
On the Paseo, There are 9 bolts holding the fender on on the passenger side, 10 bolts on the driver side. Three or Four under the hood, one you need to get to with the door open on the top of the fender, one on the bottom of the car, two in the splash guard, two behind the corner light.

To remove the splash guard, remove the black clips, the screws holding it to the bumper, and two screws near the door. (It still isn't entirely easy to remove completely from the fender, there are two clips where the screw near the doors are that don't release easy.

2) Open the door and remove the door stopper. There's a pin that keeps the two pieces together.

Remove the door panel, and cut the tape holding the wiring harness down (there's a spot next to the speaker that is hard to get to), you need this extra slack. Also pop out the rubber boot that holds the wiring that's between the door and dash.

3) Close the door, Tape it as many places at you can. Side of the door, top of the door, etc etc. I also recommend squeezing paint sticks between the bottom of the door and door frame, tape them in place too. I used duct tape.

4) Remove the top and bottom hinges of the door. Carefully. If the door starts to shift too much (it still might ~1/5", so more than that, stop), retighten the bolts, and secure with more tape.

5) Line up the holes on the new hinges to as many holes on the car as you can and start all the bolts.

I put the wiring harness UNDER the part that attaches to the door

Tighten all the bolts as best as possible. The hinges I have, I lined up only 4 of the 8 possible holes, but that was one hole in each corner.

Screw in the top end of the hydraulic pump.

6) After you verify all the bolts are tight, and that when you take the tape
off, it won't just fall off... take the tape off the door.

Open the door out, and then up as high as you can.

While lowering the door slightly, insert the hydraulic pump into the lower portion of the hinge.

I hit a minor issue with this on the driver side. The bottom portion of the spot where the hydraulic pump goes was not moving freely, which meant that the pump would not compress. Stick a screw driver or bar in this area and move it back and forth to loosen the movement of the area.

7) Lower the door. While the door is down but not closed... insert a pin into the bottom portion of the hydraulic pump (if that's how your hinges work)

Lift the door to verify the pump behaves correctly, and will not come out.

8) Wrap your wiring in electrical tape and Cable tie it to the part of the hinge that connects to the door. (not the frame of the car)

9) Verify that your fender will fit over the hinges before you modify the fender

10) Spot weld, or fully weld, or don't weld, the hinge to the frame of the car for added support. The hinges are heavy, the door is heavy, things slide. My kit came w/ lock washers for the bolts, so that will help, but not 100%. I also fabricated a small bracket (Where you see the blue tape on the left side of the picture) and JB Welded that in place. This will keep the hinge from flexing too much.

11) Cut and roll the fender to keep the hinges from rubbing. This will also eliminate one of the 9 screws holding on the fender.

12) Reinstall the fender and splash guard.

13) Reinstall the door panel if you haven't yet. (this is... not hard, but kind of scary when the door is up in the air.)

14) Clean up tape residue, wash your car, put your tools aways. Or if you haven't done the other side yet.... go back to step 1 and repeat.

15) Go drive to the gas station, or walmart or something, and show off.
