Stock engine & transplant to Eclipse GS-T

The 1G DSM is the same engine as the Mitsubishi Gallant VR-4 except it is Front Wheel Drive (FWD) instead of an All Wheel Drive (AWD). It is not quite as old as the VR-4 engines I was looking at, so that was a positive also. In the end I have ended up rebuilding the whole engine using forged internals and EVO VII parts, so I guess the age did not really matter.

The stock Mitsubishi details are as follows: -

Mitsubishi 4G63T

4-cylinder, turbocharged, DOHC, front engine FWD
Displacement : 1,985/1,997 cc(205 hp/210 hp)
Valve System: DOHC 16 valves, 4 valves per cylinder
Transmission : 5-spd manual, 4-spd automatic
Fuel economy : city - 23 mpg(manual), 20 mpg(auto)
highway - 31 mpg(manual), 27 mpg(auto)

Horsepower : 210 hp @ 6000 rpm, 205 hp @ 5750 rpm
Torque : 214 lb-ft @ 3000 rpm, 209 lb-ft @ 2200 rpm
0-60 mph : 6.5 sec.(GS-T, manual)

** This is using the stock TD05 Turbo **

Transmission
The Eclipse standard box has been installed. As the drive shaft and CV boots were slightly different from the Sonata, we used the drive line of a Mitsubishi V6 Magna. I also have a Monza quick shift kit ready to be installed.

Brakes
Front ventilated discs. Single piston calliper. In comparison the Eclipse brakes were about 1-2mm bigger than my stock brakes, so I decided to keep the stock ones. I will be upgrading them to DBAs shortly.

Exhaust
Custom made 3 all the way through from engine to tailpipe. Have used a Titanium exhaust set up, based on weight minimisation, & for the fact that it looks pretty cool with the blue tinge to it.

Now for the before & after shots of the engine as a comparison.

The Eclipse install was not looking as neat as the stock one, but with a couple of future mods performed further on, I think it looks much better. My main goal at this stage was just to get the car on the road & set up how I wanted it. I could then see how the engine was performing, and adjust to suit.

Here are some more shots detailing the first install: -

Here is how the engine set up looks in the Eclipse

After customs cleared the engine, it was then shipped off to the mechanic where it sat for a while & was finally mounted in my engine bay.

On the first transplant, I did not want to go with polished aluminium, mainly due to the fact that I knew I was going to upgrade it all at a later stage.

When we looked at the wiring of the engine bay, our options were to simply wire the engine to the existing Eclipse ECU or to go an aftermarket chip. As I want to do more performance upgrades I decided it was best to put in an after market ECU.

We then installed the EMS 8860 chip. More information can be found at http://www.enginemanagementsystem.com/

After all that was done, it was time to pick out our air filter. I went for a K&N style ram pod set up.

Whilst we were under the hood, we threw in the TurboSmart Mach II Blow Off Valve (BOV) & decided to re-locate the battery to the trunk. This then also gave me an opportunity to upgrade to a bigger battery & place the ram pod in the available space.

Now for the power output. The dyno was confirmed at 145.1kw at the wheels. Which I am told this would be around 194-197hp at the wheels.

I didn't want to stop there. 145kw is great, but I wanted more. Below is the latest upgrades.

As you can see here, all the intercooler pipes have been replaced and a new valve cover has been installed.

Here you can now see the custom manifold & TurboSmart 48mm Pro-Gate.

Here is the new turbo ... It is sure to turn some heads... I went with the Garrett GT30..

Here she is getting ready to be fuel mapped and Dyno Tuned.

We had the engine running at 17psi and she was putting out 200kw @ the wheels. We were going to run more boost but the Throttle Bodies, and Intake Manifold were stock and were restricting the output a little. Here is the Dyno results on the different boost levels.

Intake manifold has been upgraded with larger TB's, new coils, and all new custom wires. Here are the pics: -

Output at the moment is 238wk @ the wheels. This is running 20psi, and the engine is built to run above 22psi, but we had a little bit of trouble controlling the boost. We need to have a better tune and play around with the Apexi AVC-R a little more. Will see how it all goes. I had the dyno sheet, but it got destroyed by my cat knocking over a cup of coffee sitting on the bench ... Guess it teaches me to put stuff away.. :(

I have also thrown on a Oil Catch Can to take some of the stress away. I had a smaller one originally, but decided to go with this: -
