I bought the coupe from an old friend of mine named Rudy Diephuis of Hayward CA. This was a 12 year project of his, and quite a lot of work was already done to the car. Unfortunately, Rudy passed away shortly after selling the car to me in 2001
Rudy was a racer, and a true Pontiac performance guru that started racing Pontiacs in 1964 when he bought a new '64 GTO for a race car. Rudy's last race car was a '63 LeMans tube chassis racecar capable of running 8.30s @ 155mph. he ran at Sacramento, Sears point, and Bakersfield. He is well known in the Pontiac world for having ran a Ram Air V powered Pontiac Astre in Pro Stock in the 70s

Below are pics of Rudy's last racecar, the coupe sitting next to the LeMans racecar, and the Astre racecar at Rudy's shop:
The engine below is going into the Coupe, and is a balanced '69 428HO - 390hp with TRW forged pistons that have been dished to give 9.5-1 compression, '63-'65 421HO forged rods that have been heat treated, and re-sized with ARP bolts. the heads are '69 #16 428HO heads with hardened seats, stainless valves, speed-pro springs, crane pushrods, and comp guide plates. The cam is a crane blueprint HO cam, the exhaust manifolds are longbranch HO manifolds. Once in the car, the intake manifold, carbs, and valve covers will be changed to a Doug Nash tunnel ram with dual AFB carbs and Offenhauser finned aluminum valve covers.

The front suspension is an aftermarket Mustang II rack & pinion setup with disc brakes. It will be getting airbags added to it soon.
The rearend is a '57 Pontiac with 31 spline 3rd member, and Dutchman aftermarket axles. Rear brakes are Hurst/Airheart discs.
The interior trim was originally woodgrain, and still in good condition...I only had to clearcoat it:
A few NOS items i picked up for it:
'48 hood ornament:
Grille center:
Grille emblem:
Ashtray:
Wiper assemblies:
Mirrors:
Fuel pump plate:
Pics of when I first brought it home..shows quite a difference in the paint depending on the lighting:

Wow! All this and now GM dissavows any knowledge of Pontiac. Bummer
Great work thought! Can't wait till this one is completed....But then again, these projects really never are ....done.....are they?
