Objective: Custom install a factory Mazda modular double din sized headunit into 94-97 miata (I've only done a '94), to mount flush with illumination and dimming working as factory.Tools: a. Assorted screwdrivers, flat and phillips. Small sized set might be needed. b. Ford or Mazda radio removal tools c. Wire crimp pliers, wire cutters or soldering tools d. Dremel with sanding and cutting discs, or a steady hand with a blade e. Sandpaper or emory boards. f. Drill with various bits. g. Felt pen for marking parts.Parts: a. Mazda double din single cd or 6 disc headunit from Protege, Tribute, 626 or Millenia. From my understanding any of these will work the same. I installed a 2002 Protege 5 headunit so I can only speak to that particular unit. b. "Reverse" wiring harness that goes into the rear of the Protege unit. c. "Regular" wiring harness that goes into the Miata factory harness. d. Installation kit for aftermarket singe DIN radio into the factory opening, or the factory side mounting plates from the OEM Miata radio e. Some bits of wire 2ft long, t-taps for tapping into wiring, butt-crimp connectors or soldering stuff if you want to solder. f. If you want to bypass the dremeling step, then apparently you can buy a '97 center dash console cover and it will have the correct opening.WIRING HARNESS CREATION: 1. Connect the appropriate color wires from the "into Miata" harness with the "into Headunit" harness. These are the two harnesses you need to connect together. Once they are connected you will make a revision to allow dimming.
