I also have a speed boat wich I'm in teh process of also restoring, only 16.5' long and powered by a 455 olds motor, and a berkley jet drive. As you can see in the picture the design which I made up, is masked off, the guy wants to do it backwards, he painted the left and right side different colors, thats the color that the design is going to be, then I've added an outline about an inch away from each design, because we are going to spray silver around the red and red around the silver.

I masked off the inside design, as well as the other half which woudl be getting painted, eg. if left side is getting painted right side is all masked off. now you would figure I would have to mask the oustside of the outside mask job, but its going to be painted the base coat anyways, its totaly backwards, but thats how its done I geuss. the base coat is going to be a 'jack black', basically black with red metallic in it, I want to add some red flake. I have the seats ready to be put in, and new white gauges. check back soon as the boat has the priority as it is sunny out.
Update july 16 2003
took some pictures of the masking job
that I did. what the paper is covering is obviously going to stay, we are going to spray red over it, and it will be a parimeter color around the design. we didn't have to tape it that 1" as we did, as we found out later, because we have to mask it off for when we paint the actual basecoat, so we could do it either way.

Update July 17 2003
The design on the passanger side got
painted. you can see now the silver has red parimeter trim around it, the tape on the outside will be coming off, then I have to mask over the design again, including the newly painted red part and paint it jack black, with some red flake in it. I also included some pictures of my seats, got it done for $600 should cost $1500.

update july 18 2003
painted the other side
of the design as well, getting it ready for the black base coat (jack black).

Update July 20 2003
we got the boat with the jack black,
its black with red pearl in it. I figured it doesn't have as much red as I wanted in it, so were going to put some red metal flake on the boat, its gonna looks sweet. wet painted the boat, let it dry for a day, wet sanded it, and then added pin striping. I did the design myself, and most of the guys helping thought it wouldn't have turned out as good as it did, but I think they are astonished by it, I think it looks sweet, the back part could have been better, but what can you do. well I hope you enjoy these next pictures, tommorow we are going to go get some clear coat and hardener, so its actually 2 gallons, made by Edura. good stuff. that way we can clear the boat as is about 3 times, get some depth to it, then put on some clear with red flake, and then probably 7 or 8 coats of clear, it will make the flakes look really deep in the paint, and also look like there hovering, hope you stay tuned.

Update july 22 2003
got the flake and tonns of clear coat put on. 2 gallons of clear and still need more, but this is the paint job basically, it wont look any different with more clear on.. all I gotta say is bonerific. check it out for yourself, the close ups are to show the red flake which we put int, looks fukin dope

TIME FOR THE CLOSE UPS, PUT ON THE SHADES!!!

update, july 25 2003
got some pictures of the boat outside in the sun, does it look sweet or what? very few flaws with the paint, pretty good for only having to buy beer, smokes and the paint for a couple days.
