hey man i have a 1980 trans am 301 turbo i would recomend looking for an engine like mine they are a tad bit rarer but if you find one and get it cleaned it will be worth every bit of your time and effort.. and sooner or later if you want to get more performance in it you can drop in a compatibly turbo in it and replace the old one. check mine out;)

Nice car! BUT, another poster said you should put a 454 in. WRONG! If you did that, you'd have to replace the transmission too. Starting in 1960, GM engine to tranny connection was totally standardized, Chevy had one standard, and everybody else had another. So the Buick engine you have now can't be replaced with a Chevy engine without changing the transmission as well. If you really want a bigger engine, I would recommend a 400 from a 69-70 1/2 Pontiac. The bolt up SHOULD be the same...check around on that one. The 400 from those years pulled 330 horse @4800 RPM. (This was prior to the Clean Air Act.) However, with a bigger engine, you MUST watch out for the gearing in the rear end. Too little, and you'll burn the tires, not to mention tear it up totally. If you go too high, you'll destroy your engine. (I found this out years ago with my first Firebird.) The RPM's get to high for long periods of time, and the rods will start uh knockin'. Just watch out for the engine to tranny hook up. If you get a 454, you'll DEFINATLY have to swap out the tranny too.

NOOOO!!! DO NOT GET A 350, 400, 403, 454, or a 455! IF you want class and show, than get a 301 turbo. Its a rare find but www.precisionmotors.com sells em for a good price. They get about 210 HP and 345 torque stock, and with a filter maybe 225 HP and 360 LBS torque. As opposed to the 400 which is only 185 HP and 320 Torque. As stated, they are rare motors which would essentially give your car that "Limited Edition" feel that you have been searching for :). If you want speed, then i reccomend the 454 Big Block with a 4 barrel Holley carb, holley blower, and an Edelbrock 800 CFM intake manifold. Throw on some Hooker Headers and a set of flowmaster 40 series (delta flow) and add a Hurst shift kit with 3.73 POSI gears. This should run you around 600 HP. But with all that, yer engine will prolly get about 8 MPG so its up to you. Let me know what you end up doing. Later bud.
