The Screamin' FleaDecember 2009. After two separate seasons in regional autocross with my 2006 WRX TR and not having much success due to a combination of learning the sport and being lumped into competition with cars 70hp my senior in STU (i.e. the WRX STi), I decided to have a go at a class where I could afford a vehicle that competes at or near the top of its category. As they say on the Grassroots Motorsports forums, the answer to all questions is "Miata." And so it came to be. After searching the area for a number of months for a first generation car, I finally found this unmolested, original condition 1997 version with only 83k miles. My intention is to run the car in E Stock. This should more or less remove the car from the equation and reveal to me how badly I need to work on the loose nut behind the wheel. I say "more or less" because there's always the ringer cars like the R model Miata's which have superior handling and are lighter than my version. I wanted a car with manual windows, but this one was so clean and priced right, I had to bite. It's got power windows, power steering, and power remote rearview mirrors. All those serve to do is add weight, but I'll probably leave them on for now. Maybe if I ever get uber-competitive such that the weight savings afforded by removing those items would kick me up a notch I'll do it, but not until then.
