Welcome to my general information RX-7 page!
This is where I'm going to keep info on various rotary powered cars that I've gathered up over the time I've owned my car. I'll be posting info about all the generations of RX-7s and I will even get into other models of wankle powered cars Mazda created since the birth of the Cosmo Sport.
Click here for a great info on how the rotary actually functions!
In this page I'll be referring to different years of RX-7s by their chassis code:
(1979-1982)-SA
(1983-1985)-FB
(1986-1991)-FC
(1992-1995)-FD
The chassis code is the first two letters in the VIN number.

The First Generation Mazda RX-7.
The first gen RX-7 was a cheap, affordable sports car.
It's 50/50 weight distribution and low center of gravity made possible by it's 1.1 litre Wankle Rotary Engine. It's light weight and FR layout (front engine, rear wheel drive) made it a very popular car back in the early 80's.
It also sold more than any other generation of RX-7 and Mazda owes it's very existance today to its success.
Modified SA RX-7.
The carburated 1.1 litre "12a" engine is claimed by Road & Track to have 100hp @ the rear wheels and 105lbft of torque. The SA is rated at around 2450lbs while the FB's lighter bumpers and other modifications tips the scales at around 2300lbs...with a 5speed of course. It ran 0-60 in 9.2 seconds and had a quarter mile time of 17 seconds.
Manntis' engine bay was sooo clean. And a perfect example of what all stock 13b's looked like from factory...even had the stock battery! May it rest in peace. Visit his site: rotorhead.ca
In 85 the GSL-SE's 1.3 litre "13b" engine came out. It featured larger rotors, a fuel injection system and 6 ports instead of 4 like the 12a had. This increased power to 135hp and 133lbs ft of torque. Car and Driver took it out and ran a 0-60 time of 7.8 seconds and a 1/4 mile time of 15.9 seconds. If you dont trust C&D for some reason, Road & Track tested it again and ran a 8.5 0-60 and a 16.4 1/4 mile.
The First Turbo RX-7
I guess this is where mazda was playing around with the phone dialer syle rims you see on some 2nd gens
In japan, Mazda released a Savanna GT or GTX model of RX-7. This car came with a fuel injected, turbocharged 1.1L engine and was equipped on the last of the first generation RX-7s.
In the 80's everything was big...well, not RX-7s...but you gotta love the big hair!!! Note the "Savannah Turbo" Sticker on the front bumper of the car? That means that this little car has more punch than the smell of that chicks hairspray.
The call of the turbocharged rotary engine.
I love that orange intake manifold!
One thing rotaries love...IS BOOST! The first turbo 1.1L engine, running 6.2psi of wonderful boost, puts out 160hp @ 6000rpm and 165lbs ft of torque @ 4000rpm. The second version of the engine packed a different turbo codenamed "Impact Turbocharger" for its smaller compressor design maximizing the power gained by the rotary's characteristic forceful exhaust gas emissions. This increased horsepower to 165hp and significantly increased torque on the low-end.
(Thanks to Craig's Rotary Page for some of the information regarding the 12a turbo, for more info, contact his site: Craigs Rotary Page)
