Jayson always liked sports cars. From Cobra Convertibles, to BMW Z4s, to Porsches, the excitement from driving a high powered car was undeniable. But with a sports car, comes sports car problems. The constant drone of a loud exhaust. The uncomfortable ride over anything but the flattest surface. Only two front seats – and no room for cargo. Then there comes the broken control arms, rear carriers, and who knows what else. And on top of that, usually no warranty is provided once you start modifying the vehicles.

Enter the Cadillac CTS. Jayson bought one to drive through the winter last year, and loved it. A decent 260hp V6, combined with Cadillac’s “Art & Science” and every comfort option you could want. But there was one problem. The CTS is Cadillac’s entry level sedan. There was something bigger, better, more expensive, and fast.

The Cadillac STS is their Flagship Sedan. Available with a 320hp V8 Northstar engine, and more features and computers than you know what to do with, the STS combines the speed of a sport car with the luxury of a full size sedan. Jayson decided to purchase a 2007 fully loaded Cadillac STS with a potent V8 engine right after the winter. A great $60,000 car as it comes; he soon realized some modifications were necessary.

The car looks great, but the front bumper and grill changed for the 2008 models, creating a larger, wider grill. The newest style front bumper swap was necessary, and instead of going with the factory grill, an E&G Fine Mesh upper and lower grill was installed. Next, the factory HIDs are only 4300k – and the fog lights were standard halogen, despite being in projector housings. 3 sets of 55w Phillips 8,000k HIDs were installed into the headlights, fog lights, and high beams. Then leds were installed in the white running lights in the headlight. The final thing to change on the front end was the orange bulbs in the daytime running lights, which were replaced with yellow chrome coated bulbs to give the front end a very clean look.

On the rear of the car, a STS-V Factory Spoiler and third brake light was added, as well as a chrome trunk strip, like on the DTS. Ultra bright white LEDs were installed in the reverse lights. Every single bulb on the interior of the car was replaced with ultra bright white LEDs. 5% Tint was installed on side windows, 50% on the front, with a 2.5% sunstrip and 2.5% on the rear window. Wheels were added to simulate the 7 spoke look of the STS-V. The wheels are 20" KMC Chrome Slides on Nitto NT555 245/45/20 and 255/45/20 in rear.

There is not much you can do to a Northstar V8 to increase performance. The factory air box was removed, and replaced with a K&N Konical Cold Air Induction System. This has a custom built Corsa Pro Series Exhaust, perfected and tuned by Gus Markou. With those modifications, and the proper traction on factory wheels, the STS ran a 13.6 – respectable for such a large luxury sedan.

While it may not be as customized as some of the other rides in Domestic Driver, it is unique and rare to see on the road. Jayson isn’t quite finished yet, but so far his STS is quenching his old sports car feelings, in performance and styling.
