RACING WITH THE 393---NOT A DISSAPOINTMENT, BUT A LEARNING EXPERIENCE!!

67greengt's 1967 Ford Mustang 67greengt's 1967 Ford Mustang

Well, this is pretty old news but have been too busy to post it on here. I got a chance in late september to run my car with the new motor at the track.
It was the same scenario as last time meaning no tuning, just the addition of slicks. I didn't want to adjust my traction bars for the day because I knew the car launched straight to begin with. The point of the runs was to see what she'd run with no tuning..out of the box kind of runs. Also one very key thing is that my slicks have some pinholes in them and because of this I run tubes. When you run tubes you cannot dial the pressure way down to where it should be because you run the risk of getting so good of traction you could rip the tube valve off causing a flat... Slicks were set at 18psi...I know this is way to high but I didn't have any other choice. Next time they will be set at 12 psi on different rims with beadlocks and no tubes.

So, all that aside here's what she did
Only made two runs :-( it was pretty busy!!

First run:
60 ft --- 3.118 secs
330 ----- 6.996
1/8th --- 9.987
MPH ----- 83.62
1000 ---- 12.491
1/4------ 14.5
MPH ----- 106

Notes:
Dumped clutch at 5000RPM, severe wheel spin, but only one wheel spun. Posi clutches let go and smoked the one slick for 100ft, as evident in the terrible 60ft time. Was on the rev chip 7k for a little bit due to tire spin.. Shifted at 6700Rpm. Crossed finish line in 3rd a 6200RPM.

2nd Run:
60 ft --- 2.509
330 ----- 6.151
1/8th --- 9.132
MPH ----- 83.49
1000 ---- 11.641
1/4 ----- 13.6
MPH ----- 106

Notes:
Feathered clutch out at 2500RPM to compensate for lack of posi. A lot of engine bog...Almost stalled car due to low RPM launch. Better 60ft time, but still brutal. Shifted at 6700RPM. Crossed finish line in 3rd a 6300RPM.

PLANS AND TECHNIQUES FOR NEXT TIME I RUN THE CAR:

So first thing right off the bat that's obvious is my 60ft time is totally brutal!! Mostly because my posi is hooped, but there are also some other factors.
Correction? Installing a detroit locker...no more clutches just raw traction all the time!! Adding competition engineering subframe connectors to stiffen things up on the launch. Getting a different set of rims that I can beadlock and run without tubes in order to run a proper inflation of 12-15psi. Was using my dads magnums that I can't beadlock.

Next problem, I later found out that I was shifting the car too high and was nosing way over the power band in every gear, thus the reason for not getting into 4th.
Correction? Short shift at 5500-5800RPM. Will also be swapping out the 3.50's for 4.11's to pick things up a little bit, hopefully bringing up my MPH.. It should be around 110-115MPH

Have also added an auto meter quick shift lite for consistent shift rpm's. I will be running in the super shifter brackets next season, so consistency is key.

Finally, I need all the seat time that I can get!! More seat time means more of a feel for the car. When to make changes, tuning etc.

Well I hope this gives you an idea of what its all about. In all reality I'm not upset at what it ran, because you can never expect the car to run what you want it to in the first 2 runs!! When all things are sorted out and I get lots of seat time it should go low 12's if not hi 11's. But it will all depend on me the driver and the traction the car can get...

I'm building a 67 fastback, and have to do everything you did. What did you start with first when theres nothing really good to weld to? I hop mine turns out half as good as yours did.
