I bought this truck new in October of 1996 and it was one of the first off the boat from Japan. It was the lowly base model as I wanted the 2.7 litre 4 cylinder and 5 speed trans. but no anti-lock brakes and it had about 4 different shades of gray on the exterior and an all gray interior. I've since done my best to eliminate as much of that gray as possible.
I started by painting the bumpers, grill, rear license housing, and rear wind deflector red to match. Acuza Bounce 20" wheels with Falken S/TZ04 275-45x20 tires were added as well as a sunroof, running boards, and window tint. I added clear corner and bumper lights, Hella foglights, and Altezza taillights from Matrix Racing. Latest addition is a polished billet T-Rex grill.
Below are photos of engine bay featuring new TRD SUPERCHARGER. I have also added the Alpine upgrade kit for this which includes a smaller supercharger pulley, fifth injector, and boost sensing piggy back ECU. Now I have installed a 2" pulley on this supercharger to make 11 lbs. of boost. I now have a 2.7 litre 4 cylinder that should have no problem keeping up with the new 4runners with the 4.7 V8.
Performance upgrades include; Downey 4-1 ceramic header, Magnaflow high flow catalytic converter, Magnaflow polished stainless muffler, and K&N cold air intake. I estimate horsepower to be about 250. Ignition wires are Vitek and Hyper Ground System and about a mile of silicone vacuum hose was added. I removed the valve cover and painted it chrome yellow as well as the front coil springs.
I changed out the window cranks for black ones too. WeatherTech window vent shades were added. I put a couple of red 9" neons under the dash. If I could only find a source for cool-glow gauge faces in KPH???
For the interior I chose Wet Okole seat covers in red and black and Husky molded floor mats. I painted the velour of the door panels black along with red vinyl paint. The dash came out and got a coat of colour matched red with black for top cover (these were all gray originally of course) along with the center console. Sound system is Kenwood Excelon MP3 deck with 6" Massive Audio speakers in the front doors, 4" Massive Audio speakers in the rear doors and 2- 10" Massive Audio subwoofers in band pass cabinet along with (you guessed it) Massive Audio amplifier in trunk. Alarm system is Saturn.
Here is what Road4runner looks like in the winter or for offroading. I painted the stock 15" wheels black and have 31X10.5 Trailblazer Regul A/T's on it. Looks a little different?
I like to enter the local show and shines and here is a photo of the last one entered along with my 1991 Mazda Miata. As you can see from the photos I have a trailer hitch to tow my huge old Starcraft tent trailer. I added a set of Air Lift to the rear coils and a set of Rancho shocks to handle the extra weight. The performance mods make it pull it with ease. I hope you enjoy my little Road4runner and thank you for checking it out.
