IS IT A LeMANS? IS IT A TEMPEST?
These are the questions I am always asked and I always answer " NO!!! It is a CUSTOM S"
So I decided to have a page of FACTS and FIGURES about the CUSTOM S.
In 1969 Pontiac Motors had 4 models that looked similiar but were all different. These models were the Tempest, the LeMans, the GTO and the Custom S. Many people classified them all as Tempest's or LeMan's. For example a LeMans GTO, a Tempest or LeMans Custom S or a Tempest LeMans.
The only true way of telling them apart is by the VIN #
The first 3 numbers of the VIN for each model in 1969 are:
These number are followed by 3 more numbers. The next 2 numbers in the series show they style of the car. The last number is the year(should be 9 for 1969). That is then followed by a letter for where it was built and then another series of numbers, which is the manufacture series number.
The CUSTOM S was only manufactured in 1969.
It came in the 6 styles
* 2 door Hardtop Coupe(23537)
* 4 door Sedan (23569)
* Sport Coupe(23527)
* 4 door Hardtop(23539)
* Station Wagon(23535 or 23536 depending on how the tailgate was hinged)
(see photo above for the different styles)
Of the different styles of CUSTOM S (as with all cars) only a certain number were made.
According to Pontiac Historical Society (PHS)the numbers are as follows:
* 2 door Hardtop Coupe(23537)--46,855
* 4 door Sedan (23569)--16,532
* Sport Coupe(23527)--7,912
* 4 door Hardtop(23539)--3,918
* Station Wagon(23535 or 23536 depending on how the tailgate was hinged)--6,963
For a total of 84,590 Custom S's
THE TAIL TELL SIGNS
While riding down the road, it is hard to tell the Tempest, LeMans and Custom S apart from the front unless you see the nameplate on the front fenders. The GTO is easier to spot because of the Enduro front bumper.
Where the difference is in the rear end.
The Custom S taillights are rectangular and have a chrome outline around the lens. The trunk has the "PONTIAC" nameplate which is one piece and looks like it is underlined.
The LeMans taillights are rectangular and have chrome dividing the lens into thirds. The trunk has the "PONTIAC" nameplate which is all seperate letters.
The Tempest taillights are rectangular and have the chrome outline around the lens. The trunk has the "PONTIAC" nameplate which is one piece and looks like it is underlined.(photo courtesy of 6t9poncho)
The GTO taillights are rectangular and have the chrome dividing the lens in half. The trunk has the "GTO" nameplate located on the right right side.
THE INTERIOR SIGNS
Each model had there own interiors
The Custom S has a full Morrokide interior. It came with a bench seat with vertical lines and buttons. The door panels say "Custom" on them just below the window and a chrome accent piece just above the armrest.
The Tempest has a Cloth with Morrokide trimmed interior. It came with a bench seat with the horizontal lines. The door panels have a chrome piece just below the window.
The LeMans also had the Morrokide interior. If you ordered a 4 door you had your choice of either the notch back front bench seat(shown on right above)or the bench seat with the diamond shapes (shown on left above). With the Convertible and 2 door models you could choose between the notch back front bench seat or bucket seats like in the GTO. The door panels all say "LeMans" on them. See the pictures above for the difference with the chrome trim on the door panels.
The GTO also had a full Morrokide interior. It came with bucket seats. The door panels say "GTO" on them.
There is more to come, so keep checking back.
