How to Install an Auto-Dimming/Compass Mirror from a 2003 Maxima onto your '00-'02 Maxima:

This is the auto-dimming mirror that came standard on my 2k2 Maxima (no compass):

This is what happened when I turned up the bass one summer day. The ball & socket located closest to the windshield snapped on its own:

So I was in need of a new mirror. The 1st thing you need to know is the style of mount your mirror uses (the mount that attatches to the window). Mine used a Wedge Mount with a Torque Screw (the most common style):

I purchased a used mirror from Deon in Illinois (his info later) which included a compass feature:

This is what the mount of the new mirror looks like. You will notice there is no torque screw. But not to worry, it still slides on very tightly, even without the screw:

This is what the plug looks like behind the mirror. To remove the existing plug, press down on the plug with your thumb & pull out. Use your stock wiring and plug in the new mirror. (ignore the grey square on the windshield, it is double sided tape I used but later removed):

Now reuse the black plastic cover over the mirror wiring. The 2nd picture shows how the plastic cover fits onto the metal mount:

Left picture shows the plastic cover not fully installed. Right picture shows the cover slid up behind roof lining:

This is what the wedge mount bracket attached to the window looks like. The mirror simply slides onto this. Make sure to fully slide the mirror onto it, but don't use too much force, b/c you could crack your window this way:

Mirror mounted and wired up:

Once installed, press the "compass" button to turn on the compass. It will have to be programmed to your area. Press & hold down the "compass" button until the display changes to numbers. Now press the "compass" button again until you see an "8" or "9". Now press & hold down the compass button again until you see a "C" displayed. Leave the mirror alone and it will automatically configure itself to your area. Finished product:

These mirrors can be purchased from Deon from maxima.org:
