How I Found The Car
I spotted a 1970 Monte in the corner of a Nissan dealership parking lot while my friend was looking for a car. I was 100 ft away but it looked nice. A salesman overheard my comments and told me it was his. He told me some information such as the fact that it had 45,000 miles and a 350 engine. He did mention that he was thinking of selling it also. I had no money and didn't really consider it. I never even looked at it closely. For two weeks, all I could think about, or talk about, was that car. Finally, the bank (Dad) approved an interest-free loan for me to possibly buy the car. My Dad and I took a closer look at it. It had original paint, vinyl, interior, everything. The car had been very well looked after. I had it looked at by a mechanic I know and he test drove it. He said "if you don't buy it, I will." That's all I needed to hear. We settled on a price of $4,200 dollars Can. (approx. $2,500 US). I didn't realize how good a deal this was until later. I finally closed the deal in November 1996.
My Monte Carlo's History
This is the story as I heard it when I got the car. It turns out that the original owner had it until April 1996 when she did some minor damage to the passenger quarter. The body shop she took it to bought it from her and fixed it. The guy I bought it from chased owner #2 down and bought it in May. That guy (the salesman mentioned above) did maintenance totaling $1,500 dollars Can. When I bought it, it had a brand new exhaust system, radiator, BFG tires, master cylinder, wheel alignment, and other misc. maintenance. I think I got a good deal.
Other Information
The original paint and vinyl was in awesome condition when I bought the Monte. I decided to paint the whole car and get new vinyl when the front end was hit in an accident. Check out my paint shop photos on this site. The engine compartment was relatively clean and untouched when I got it. I have since restored the engine compartment including all of the proper decals. The engine compartment is still a work in progress though. The interior is in extremely good condition and does not require much restoration. I have kept the car strictly stock and the car is exactly as the build sheet reads. The Monte Carlo now has 75,000 miles on it and I enjoy every mile I drive in it.
