Page One Here is where things sit...
I had an IHI VF-22 Turbo, Helix Up-pipe, Walboro 255Lph Fuel pump, AEM Intake, Perrin Turbo Inlet pipe, Manuel Boost Controller, Aluminum Fidanza Flywheel(removed had problems described below), the ACT stage one clutch(removed), Exedy OE clutch, turbo XS type RFL B.O.V., Greddy Turbo Timer, Green Stuff brake pads, Apexi AVC-R(removed), Wings West Body kit, Drag Brand Rims (17X7") with Nitto Neo Gens, Clear Sidemarkers, JUN Eyebrows. Custom Turbo Back exhaust 3", exhaust flange for turbo fabricated by metal masters in Camden, DE out of 1/4" Steel plate stock. 3" pipe installed by Exhaust ETC by Jerry and Jim in Felton, DE with a Vibrant 3" Inlet Short race muffler from Sound of Tri-state.
The rest is pretty much listed.
Problems started early after purchase of a REPO with 10k mi. Had Dodge Stealth wih a 5Spd so I knew how to drive a clutch but stock clutch went @12k mi. Previously owned by a female (sorry ladies). Replaced with Fidanza Aluminum flywheel and ACT stage one clutch. Great ideals but only in theory. The stock flywheel was 28lbs. and the Fidanza 14lbs. This took away all of the usable torque needed to pull the car off the line or even everyday driving. Fidanza sent me the wrong Flywheel and I didn't measure the flange in the center to verify that they were the same, i just checked thickness and diameter. I re-installed to the crank with factory bolts and blue loctite. It came off shearing off bolts in crank shaft. I easy out'd the bolts and went to Dover Hardware for some correct length Bolts. They didn't have the length I needed. The following Monday I contacted Fidanza, they all but called me a liar. At my own cost I paid for the vehicle to sit in a shop (twice shop fees), storage, towing and being out of a car. I sent both flywheels to Fidanza with bolts and they finally admitted wrong doing. About a dozen flywheels got out with the wrong flange thickness, mine was only one... Stillen sold me the ACT clutch and took two weeks to ship, they will not receive my business again. I got the right flange thickness flywheel and Installed. Revved great and was insanely fast from a roll. Launch characteristics were poor and had to take off at 4 grand to stay with traffic. Everyone stalled the motor and I did as well monthly. The high revving and slipping to pull off killed even the great ACT heavy duty clutch. The hard engagement of clutch killed second gear and blew a hole in my transmission case. Problimatic setup temporarily resolved. New JDM tranny and Exedy Clutch OE style installed with turned down stock flywheel. Burn up soft clutches, it's better than paying for new transmissions!
Recirculate or Blow off valves?
On most set-ups now, the air volume is calculated based on what enters the intake through the Mass air flow sensor. This air volume that is calculated is used to measure the amount of fuel the engine is metered and the resulting Air/Fuel ratio. If you blow off any of that air volume used to calculate your fuel ratio, you are making your car go rich on the fuel and result of that is a slower car, do you really want a slower car? If you are still reading this I suspect that's not the case.
Intakes:
If you cobble together an "intake" meaning cold air or short ram out of PVC pipe, or aluminum make sure the diameter is exactly the same to maintain this ratio or the Check Engine Light or CEL will come on. As this is very difficult to find or fabricate material on a shelf; money spent on a true cold air intake is worth it on most cars. If your budget is really tight try Procarparts.com.
Transmission:
If you intend to make more than 300 WHP, get the JDM STi tranny and save yourself some frusteration. Or you have to drive like a human being, ha ha..
The Subaru SVX crowd has the same problem and it is a swapable option for that car also, I also had a SVX.
Tires:
If you like the WRX and intend to ford through nasty weather "snow" etc get the Nitto 450's, they handle snow and dirt better than the Neo Gens (which are better in the rain). If you never leave the pavement and frequent places to race, the Neo Gens rock.
Turbos:
The VF-22 is a great turbo, lots of great spooling symphony to listen to but to abrupt of a spool for off road. If you like losing all traction off-road then it's fine, it's a better road course turbo or cost effective drag application. The VF-34 is less violent. Remember turbos that come in violently can violently break your driveline (and probaby will).
Meanwhile attained a '93 Probe. The Subaru has lost all badging grill, trunk and all. I'm just dissapointed with the car. It might just sit awhile, (it sat for a year).(See last picture)
