Here's My '84 Laser Turbo. I was looking for an XE since I had two of those back in '90 and '91, but I couldn't turn this one down with only 30K miles on it. Unfortunately, I recently had a collision between the drivers door and a large concrete pillar in the underground parking area where I work :( However, it messed up the car enough that I've decided to make a project of it. I'm converting it to an XE now, starting with the wheels off of an '85(The swiss cheese wheels are my favorite). I'm halfway through converting the '84 from 4-bolt hubs to 5-bolt hubs for the '85 wheels. I also plan to convert to the '85 computer(More of a pain than I thought) so that I can get the modulated wastegate control and start using MoparCHEM to make alternate calibrations. I'm trying to retrofit the XE instrument panel electronics from my parts car into the analog dash which is also going to be a pain as the harnesses and connectors are completely different and lack several signals needed. Ultimately, I want to tear the whole thing down to the bare unibody and perform a re-design including:
Possible RWD conversion - Keeping the turbo 2.2 motor however and modifying it to produce >200 HP (T-II setup with intercooler and custom calibration should do it). The main reason for the RWD is that I can find a nice non-cable shifted transmission to put behind the motor.
Redo of the interior including two-tone leather(Blue and gray is the theme). Custom XE inspired LCD based dash run by a computer of my own design. Custom dash housing/console square-ish like the 84-86, but with a cluster pod and center console area more like the 90+ Daytonas.
I want to keep the outside clean with no plastic cladding or such from the turbo-z or XT models. I may even replace the 4 groove/rib side trim with something cleaner (Like the 85,86 XT have only without the extra cladding). I'm, considering an update to the nose and tail to make the car look more like a modern/retro design, but we'll see if I can come up with something that looks natural(ie. not like crap :P ).
Of course, two tone paint is a must (this is an 80s car :D) Some sort of uodated gunmetal blue/charcoal gray metallic color, but a little darker than the original gunmetal color. And I'll powdercoat the interior portion of the rim the charcoal color, but leave the outer 2" lip brushed and polished.
That's my plan, but to have to build my dream garage first, so I have a place to do all of this.
